Baltimore Hotels Review: Hotel Indigo

Baltimore is a city often overlooked by travelers for Washington D.C., but it is a great destination for a weekend away.  On our way to the Outer Banks, I spent two nights in Baltimore. I haven’t been there since I was young, so I was excited to explore the city! When you have a limited amount of time, hotel location is key to maximize your experience. Additionally, we’re still dealing with a pandemic, and I wanted a hotel that I felt comfortable and safe in. The Hotel Indigo Baltimore fit all those requirements.

Hotel Indigo Baltimore

Hotel Indigo Baltimore is part of the IHG group focused on being part of their local communities. No location is the same. This is what got me attracted me to this group of hotels, a compromised between the size and standards of a large chain but also being cognizant of the community they are in.

We arrived at the hotel late but check-in was easy with a drop-off area located in front of the building. There is limited parking under the hotel (for a fee) and a parking garage across the street (also for a fee). Masks are required to get buzzed into the building. There were also dog bowls with treats and water for neighborhood dogs. In the entryway there was a sign that hotel staff has been trained in how to identify and respond to human trafficking (social work is a side passion of mine… that made me really happy to see!).

One of the first things that we noticed upon entering the Hotel Indigo Baltimore was the unique artwork. There were a number of photographs on the wall that had the bottom half or so covered. The staff told us that they used to have guests find those statues in Baltimore and take a picture for a free drink at the bar! They don’t give away drinks anymore because it got a bit out of hand, but I loved the local feel of the art.

The Room

We booked a king room on the fourth floor with a small view of the city and the top of the Baltimore Basilica. The layout of the room was typical, with the bathroom to the side of the entrance, and an armoire equipped with an ironing board and safe. There was a desk, decent sized television, Keurig with coffee and tea, a lounge chair, and the bed. The ceilings were high making the room feel more open than a traditional hotel room. I also loved the blackout curtains in the room – helped with sleeping in!

The Bathroom

I usually don’t like hotel bathrooms, but really enjoyed the feel of Hotel Indigo’s bathroom. The shower was a walk-in with a handheld showerhead. The pattern on the tiles was modern and sleek. The towels were folded neatly, like a spa, under the sink.

Amenities

The hotel offers 24-hour business services and a fitness center (we didn’t use either). The business center was on the first floor and easily accessible.

There was a grab-and-go food station near the elevators. My favorite thing about Hotel Indigo is the community feel and support they have. While they had some big-name food (i.e. Pop-Tarts), the majority of the food was local brands. Local cookies were our nighttime snack, but you could even go for local ice cream. Taharka Ice Cream was founded in Baltimore in 2013. The story is now an inspiring documentary, A Dream Preferred. The company’s goal is to inspire young entrepreneurs. Ice cream with a social purpose? Yes please!

Food and Drinks at Hotel Indigo Baltimore

WiFi

WiFi was available for free. It was fast and consistent and we had no issues!

Food and Drink

The restaurant and bar are open for socially distanced meals. We were out in the city and didn’t have time to eat at the hotel. Poets Modern Cocktails & Eats have a very laid back vibe which I would like to experience on our next visit. They have breakfast, happy hour, and dinner available for reasonable prices. You can also order food to your room if you prefer.

Room Service

Due to COVID, there was not any room cleaning while we were there. However, if you needed fresh towels or forgot anything, the front desk was ready to assist.

Location

When booking a hotel, location is key – especially when visiting for a short amount of time! The hotel is within walking distance of the Baltimore Basilica and the Walters Art Museum. Surrounded by cobblestones and brownstones, the atmosphere is inviting and hospitable. The Hotel Indigo Baltimore is a half hour walk away from the Inner Harbor, and minutes by car.

Eco-Friendly

The one thing I didn’t like about Hotel Indigo Baltimore is the small bottles of shampoo and conditioner in each room. I try to be as eco-friendly as possible and would love to see them switch to the larger containers or on an as-needed basis. I love that they feature local foods in the grab-and-go and in the restaurant, saving on shipping and gas needed to move the food.

The hotel also has electric vehicle charging parking spots! We didn’t take our EV this time, but we’re always excited to see chargers! There were four 30 amp / 220V chargers available at no cost to hotel guests.

Covid-19 policies

I was truly impressed with the policies AND their enforcement at the hotel. You are not allowed into the main area without a mask. The front desk staff reminded someone leaving the hotel to bring their mask otherwise they wouldn’t be allowed back into the hotel. There was a contactless drop off area for food as well (which is the first time I’ve seen that!).  There was also hand sanitizer readily available at the elevators for anyone to use. Finally, once the rooms are cleaned after check out, a full day is between that cleaning and the next guest check in.

Final thoughts on Hotel Indigo Baltimore

If you’re planning a trip to Baltimore, then I can’t recommend Hotel Indigo enough. The location and friendly service was impressive. I felt comfortable with their cleaning policies and covid-19 policis. We were able to easily explore the city and had a wonderful place to relax at night!

  1. I love detailed reviews with pics of hotel stays when the hotels have a unique character and I get to know hotels I wouldn’t look at otherwise. Thanks for sharing this one.

  2. Great to find a hotel that proved to be a great option during the current pandemic. We do love when hotels have a bit of unique personality like this with interesting artwork. Great that they are sourcing their grab-and-go bar with foods from local suppliers. They all need some help these days. A centrally located hotel like is perfect so you can see things in a short distance from the hotel. Definitely one to check out if we find ourselves in the Baltimore area since we too are IGH Rewards members.

Admittedly, Baltimore is not high on my list of places to visit. But, if I ever happen to find myself there, I know where I am going to stay. This looks like it would be right up my alley! Thanks for the excellent review.

  4. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this hotel, it looks like a lovely place to stay if I’m ever in Baltimore. The decor in Poets bar is very inviting and I can definitely see myself enjoying a night cap there 😉

  5. The IHG group is a pretty sweet hotel brand. Question: what do you look for most in a hotel/resort? For me its convenience/location. And of course comfortable, clean, hot showers, AC. A swimming pool is a plus.

  6. Looks like a great place to stay. I agree with you about the support for local businesses & it is good to see as this often puts me off staying at the larger chain hotels when I travel. All rooms look the same. I think now more than ever if you feel safe & they have honest, open & strict policies in place for COVID then we need to shout about it. This is the only way people will feel safe to travel again. Many businesses are working so hard with this that it’s important they have our support.

  7. I like hotel recommendations because I always have a problem with choosing where to stay for the night. Such reviews are precious and helpful in making decisions. The Hotel Indigo Baltimore suits me very well. Perfect for enjoying the city. I would love to stay there when I visit Baltimore.

  8. I admit, I have only passed through Baltimore, never staying the night. I love finding unique boutique style hotels! That lobby looks so relaxing, perfect for a nightcap before bed.

  9. I stayed in the Hotel Indigo in NYC on the Lower East Side and I loved it! It had a very similar feel to this building and was one of the coolest hotels I’ve stayed at!

  10. This is exactly the kind of place I like to stay at. Hotel Indigo looks perfect for when we start travelling again. Baltimore is already on the list, as we have nearby family. Thanks.

  11. What a great looking hotel. I’ve stayed in an Indigo hotel before in other cities and always liked them and the IHG family of hotels. This one looks really nice, and I especially love that they use local food products in the grab and go convenience store

  12. Baltimore looks amazing place and good to know that there is wonderful stay. I would surely book Hotel Indigo next time when I am passing through this city. I loved the artworks in this hotel and bar looks amazing with teal grey and green shades.

  13. We have been to Indigo locations in other cities, so it’s always nice to see how the property gives character to each location. If we are ever in Baltimor this place is on our list of places to stay!
