Adventure Mother’s Day Trip Ideas
Nairobi, Kenya
In the heart of Africa lies the incredible city of Nairobi. This city is the gateway to the Serengeti and Masai Mara, making it a perfect getaway for adventurous moms!
Before you even head out of the city, be sure to explore the city. From the Giraffe Centre which helps protect the Rothschild’s giraffe and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust which rescues orphaned elephants and other animals – you can see so much right in the city!
If you and your mom are also adventurous eaters, head to Carnivore restaurant. You can try a number of unique meats like crocodile and ostrich in a variety of styles (as well as beef, chicken, etc). Basically, you eat as much meat as you can handle, then you literally pull a white flag. Then, if you can, enjoy dessert!
North Shore, Minnesota, USA
The North Shore of Minnesota is the perfect place to take your adventurous mom for a Mother’s Day getaway. With plenty of hiking trails, camping spots to relax at, wonderful resorts to stay at, and beautiful views of Lake Superior, it’s the ultimate vacation.
Around Mother’s Day, the crowds on the shore are still minimal, but the weather is beautiful. The snow has almost completely melted, flowers are starting to bloom, and the trails are open and ready for exploring.
Make your way north from Duluth and stop in small towns such as Two Harbors, Grand Marais, and Grand Portage. Each of these are home to fantastic state parks, and there are eight total on the shore.
A few favorite parks are Tettegouche, Gooseberry Falls, and Cascade River. Within these parks, you’ll find waterfalls, lake views, and wildlife. Tettegouche is home to the tallest waterfall in the state.
In Grand Marais, stop at Artist Point to walk along the shoreline and collect small pieces of seaglass to bring home.
Palisade Head is a fantastic overlook, where you might even find some rock climbers scaling the side of it. A stop at Lutsen Mountains allows you to ride the gondola to the top of Moose Mountain for beautiful views of the rolling hills.
Grab a bite to eat in Grand Marais at The Fisherman’s Daughter. This small spot serves locally caught fish from Lake Superior. A must-see spot to grab dessert is Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors.
And when it’s time to call it a night, book a stay at Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay, which provides direct access to Lake Superior.
Phuket, Thailand
Phuket, Thailand is the perfect destination for celebrating Mother’s Day. With its beautiful beaches, stunning temples, and abundant adventurous activities, it’s the perfect place for a mother-daughter trip.
May is the perfect time to visit Phuket if you and your mom want a warm and enjoyable atmosphere. With temperatures averaging in the mid to high 80s in May, it’s a great place to embark on some adventures or even just bask in the tropical sunshine.
Phuket truly is an adventure lover’s paradise, and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to activities in the area.
The ultimate adventure in Phuket is island hopping. The islands in Thailand offer an incredible array of activities, from snorkeling and diving to kayaking and wildlife spotting.
There are numerous islands to explore in the Andaman Sea, from the infamous Phi Phi Islands to Koh Racha Yai, each with unique features and activities.
If your mom is a nature buff, take her to Similan Islands National Park, which is one of the best places to visit in Thailand. Here you can explore the stunning beaches and admire colorful coral reefs in some of the clearest waters in the world.
You can also go on an ATV or buggy ride through the jungle, jet ski around the beaches, go bunjy jumping while being surrounded by stunning views, soar through the air on a zip line course, wade in the clear waters of a waterfall, and go river rafting, to name a few.
Another adventurous thing to do in Phuket is to go on a food tour. Take your mom to the local markets and introduce her to delicious, authentic Thai dishes such as spicy papaya salad, Pad Thai, and all the various curries.
Last but not least, Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa near Merlin Beach makes the perfect place to celebrate Mother’s Day. The resort provides luxury amenities, five-star service, and breathtaking views of the beach so your mom can relax and enjoy her special day.
Sedona, Arizona, USA
If you and your adventure-loving mom are looking for the perfect mother’s day getaway, look no further than Sedona, Arizona. Sedona is the perfect mix of adventure, beauty, and relaxation!
For this mother’s day getaway, you can fly to Phoenix or Flagstaff and rent a car to get to Sedona. May is also an ideal time to visit due to the slightly warmer (but not too hot) temperatures and you might even be able to catch the tail-end of wildflower season!
While in Sedona, the adventurous things to do are truly endless. I recommend starting with a sunrise hike to the famous Devil’s Bridge, searching for the caves along Soldier’s Pass trail, and maybe even checking out Instagram-famous Pink Jeep Tours. Other activities include horseback riding through the red rocks, electric bike tours, stargazing, and hot air balloon rides.
Once you are all adventured out, you can wine taste along Verde Valley or window shop down the cute Sedona main street. Here, you’ll find MANY options as to where to eat, but if looking for the best view head to Canyon Breeze.
Finally, if hoping to stay right downtown Sedona, the Enchantment Resort is a luxurious option to relax and rejuvenate after a day full of adventures! But, if looking for a more affordable option, be sure to check out hotels in Cornville or Camp Verde.
No matter where you’re adventures take you, you and your mom will surely have a mother’s day getaway to remember for years to come!
Split, Croatia
No better time of year to visit Split than in May, when the sun is out and the temperatures are mild to check off some bucket list activities. Not only is this Dalmatian city perfect for sightseeing and lingering but its central location also makes it an excellent travel base to explore the wider area. Towering cliffs, verdant valleys, and an island-dotted coast offer a wealth of activities that will rejoice your mom’s adventurous soul. Climb the steps to Marjan hill, hike your way to the mesmerizing waterfalls of Plitvice Lake or Krka National Park, visit the Roman ruins of Salona and the cliff-perched Klis Fortress, test your kayaking skills on the Cantina river, discover the underwater world on a snorkeling trip to the Blue Lagoon, drive to the top of the Biokovo mountain or set foot on one of the picturesque Dalmatian islands as part of an island-hopping cruise.
Late afternoons are spent sipping cocktails on one of the many cozy terraces in Old Town Split or tasting wines at the Cornaro hotel. A special occasion like this one should be celebrated at an equally special location. Seafront Dvor restaurant overlooking Firule beach is an excellent place to toast on Mother’s Day and bond over these newly shared adventures. This is where sunset memories are made. When it comes to places to stay, you’ll be spoilt with choice. From elegant boutique hotels in historic buildings to modern guesthouses near the beach, the Split accommodation offer is pretty much endless.
History-Loving Mother’s Day Trip Ideas
Athens, Greece
Athens, Greece is a city with over 3,000 years of history and is a fantastic place to visit with your mom. Full of interesting museums and archeological sites, Athens is worth visiting with your mom to explore and learn about Greek history. May is a great time of year to visit Athens. The weather averages between 60-75 degrees, making it perfect weather to explore all the outdoor archeological sites.
The top place to visit in Athens is the Acropolis, which dates back to the 5th century BC. The word Acropolis translates to “high city” and the Athenian Acropolis includes several notable buildings, including the Pantheon, Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, and Odeon of Herodes. A guided walking tour is a great way to learn all about the history of the Acropolis. Next to the Acropolis, is the Acropolis Museum which houses all the statues and artifacts that were found during the excavation of the Acropolis. Other notable archeological sites to visit include the Ancient Agora, which served as a marketplace in ancient times, as well as the Roman Agora, which was built during the Roman era of Athens. The National Archaeological Museum is also worth checking out, as it is the largest history museum in Greece.
When in Athens, make sure to try Greek food, especially the Gyros. There are several restaurants located in the Plaka neighborhood, and this makes for a great place to walk around and try some delicious food. For places to stay, check out Electra Athens, a 4-star hotel located in the center and within walking distance of many historical attractions.
Edinburgh, Scotland
One of the best places to celebrate Mother’s Day if your mom loves history is Edinburgh. The city is home to all different types of history to explore.
If you love castles, Edinburgh Castles stands tall over the city. It also marks the spot of the beginning of the Royal Mile. While actually 1.2 miles long, there are so many things to do on the Royal Mile that you’ll be impressed. From the Castle to Holyrood Palace, the city has so much history to explore. Learn about the dark history at The Dungeons (also known as the Torture Museum), see The Real Mary’s Close, and spit on the Heart of Midlothian where people were hung on the streets.
You can also learn about Scottish whiskey (not to be confused with Irish Whiskey or American Bourbon) at the Scotch Whisky Experience. For a traditional Scottish meal, head to Doctors which is known for their fresh fish and delicious local specialties.
For an aerial view of the city, take a short hike up Arthur’s Seat. If you have a clear day, you can see the entire city and some of the suburbs from the top.
For an easy way to explore the city, stay at a hotel near the Royal Mile. While you may think that they are all expensive, there are budget and hostel options available as well.
Montreal, Canada
Montréal, Canada is the perfect destination for a Mother’s Day getaway. Montréal is a cosmopolitan city with a unique old-world historic charm, and the blend of the two means that Montréal is a treasure trove of history to explore. If your mom loves history and culture, then Montréal is the perfect place to visit!
May is a great time to visit Montréal. The weather is pleasant (expect highs around 63°F and lows around 46°F) and you’ll avoid the busy summer season and be able to score some great deals on hotels. There are plenty of fun events to attend in Montreal in May, such as the Montreal Sketchfest (sketch comedy), a beer festival, a pasta festival, and much more!
You’ll definitely want to explore Vieux Montréal, or Old Montreal, the historic heart of the city. Stroll along the picturesque cobblestoned streets and admire the incredible architecture. Be sure to see the iconic Notre Dame Basilica with its gorgeous stained-glass windows and the Hôtel de Ville, Montréal’s stately City Hall.
Spend some time with your mom at one of Montréal’s fantastic museums, such as the impressive Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art, or the Museum of Archaeology and History.
The cuisine of Montréal has definite French influences, and along with unique favorites such as poutine you’ll find French-style treats such as Alasatian tarts. Visit Ma Poule Mouillée to enjoy another local favorite, savory Portuguese chicken. Take a Montréal food tour to savor all the best flavors of the city while you enjoy sightseeing through the top attractions in Old Montreal!
Stay at Le Square Phillips Hôtel & Suites. This hotel features full kitchens and a great breakfast buffet (including Montréal-style bagels) and is just minutes away from Vieux Montréal.
Rovinj, Croatia
One of the most beautiful destinations if you are looking for a perfect Mother’s Day getaway ideas, is definitely the charming town of Rovinj in Croatia! Your mom will be thrilled. Many picturesque highlights await you on a short trip that is sure to be unforgettable. Rovinj is absolutely wonderful, set on a small peninsula where the colorful townhouses create a backdrop right out of a travel magazine. Another highlight is Rovinj’s picturesque beaches, which are perfect for swimming as early as May when the weather is good.
Be sure to take your mom to the colorful historic old town of Rovinj. A tour of the town will take you back in time, as you explore the maze of stone streets and marvel at the many ancient buildings. In addition, Rovinj’s art scene is a real highlight in Istria, and you will have a great time exploring Rovinj’s art and visiting Rovinj’s many museums and galleries. One recommendation is the Rovigno Museum, which is housed in the Baroque palace of Counts Califfi from the 17th and 18th centuries.
But there is more! Charming, colorful town squares with numerous good restaurants invite you to enjoy. Istrian cuisine and wines are excellent. A recommendation is the Restoran Santa Croce, which serves wonderful truffle pasta and delicious fish dishes. A must in Rovinj is a walk up to the church of St. Euphemia on the town hill, where you can admire the most stunning sunsets.
Rovinj offers a wide range of accommodations! For a very special Mother’s Day, let us recommend the beautiful Hotel Lone with pool and amazing sea views.
Vienna, Austria
Vienna is an amazing destination for a Mother’s Day Getaway. The beautiful capital city of Austria is filled with amazing architecture, history, and culture.
May is an amazing month to visit Vienna. The weather is usually beautiful and sunny, and there are pretty flowers in all of the public gardens. Vienna in winter is crowded, especially during the Christmas market times. Planning a visit in spring instead is a perfect idea.
My number one recommendation for history lovers to visit in Vienna is Schönbrunn palace and gardens. The Palace itself has been home to the royal emperors of Austria for many decades in the past. Nowadays, it has been turned into a museum. It showcases different exhibits, for example about Maria Theresia and the famous empress Sisi.
The Schönbrunn gardens are the perfect spot for a scenic walk with your mum. There are flowers everywhere and if you hike up to the Gloriette, you have an amazing view of the city. Make sure to have a coffee and a traditional Apfelstrudel in Vienna, ideally at the Gloriette cafe.
If you can’t get enough of Austria’s glittering and enticing history, visit the Hofburg with the Sisi museum and the Spanish Riding School in the Inner City. The National Historic Museum is also always worth a visit.
If you are looking for some royal treatment for you and your mum, stay in the Steigenberger Hotel in the Herrengasse. It is the most exclusive street in the city, and all major attractions are close by.
Foodie Mother’s Day Trip Ideas
Boston, Massachusettes
For a Mother’s Day getaway in the city filled with incredible restaurants, water views, beautiful gardens, and of course, quality time together, head to Boston along the Massachusetts coast! In May, the gardens will have spring flowers blooming, the weather will be mild, and the summer crowds have yet to set in.
The culinary scene in Boston is truly exciting, and the most famous foods here are Italian and local seafood. The North End neighborhood is famous for some of the best Italian restaurants in the Northeast, and this is where to go for an authentic Italian meal. A great activity to do with your mom is a fun Boston food tour, many of which take you to the hidden gems in this historic and charming area, sampling the best pizza and pasta along the way.
And, of course, you can’t leave Boston without a delectable seafood feast! The New England coast is known for its local oysters, clams, scallops, lobster, and more, and most restaurants in Boston highlight these in some way. A great restaurant for a special dinner with mom is Union Oyster House, which features Boston scrod, native scallops, and full lobster dinners, to name a few. This restaurant has been around since the 1820s, and is a National Historic Landmark, too!
When you’re not eating, you’ll definitely want to make time to visit the Public Gardens and snap some photos together since it will be booming with spring color around Mother’s Day. You could also surprise your mom with a cruise along the pond on one of the famous swan boats.
For foodies, the best area of Boston to stay in is the North End or downtown district. The Battery Wharf hotel is a great choice that sits along the waterfront, and is walkable to some of the best restaurants in the North End.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
May in the southern hemisphere is just starting to cool down, meaning it’s the perfect time to visit! Buenos Aires is a bustling center of activity, with historical sites like Recoleta Cemetary, Casa Rosada and more. However, what really shines through is the mouthwatering food. Any mom that is a foodie traveler will love a Mother’s Day getaway to Buenos Aires.
Food is at the heart of this city and Argentina as a whole. Beef is a specialty in the country with Asado being at the top of the list. Grilled steak is a specialty – and the beef is incredibly fresh and locally sourced. There are countless ways to have steak in the city – from fire-grilled to on a sandwich, enjoy your favorite.
Empanadas are another specialty that is often handmade. There’s a variety of fillings from beef and chicken to veggies and cheese. Usually, there are signs to tell you, but after a while, you can tell which one is which on how the dough is rolled at the top.
Of course, no foodie trip is complete without dessert. You might be surprised to know that ice cream is a big dessert item here. Buenos Aires has a lot of Italian immigrants, so the ice cream tastes more like gelato than traditional American ice cream.
My favorite thing to do in the city is to get dinner while watching a tango show. Tango is breathtaking to watch and is steeped in the culture – so it’s perfect for your Buenos Aires bucket list.
New Orleans, USA
May in New Orleans, LA., when the weather is getting warmer but not too hot and the days are longer, the Crescent City continues beckoning travelers with its culinary prowess.
While New York is the city that never sleeps, N’awlins will happily claim it’s the city that never stops eating.
With iconic foods like beignets from Cafe du Monde, muffulettas from Central Grocery and po’boy sandwiches from Domilise, coupled with the chance to dine at storied restaurants such as Antoine’s and Galltoire’s or brunch at Brennan’s and Court of Two Sisters and so much more, there’s no doubt that New Orleans is a popular destination for foodies.
Mother-and-daughter duos who want to experience New Orleans’ fable culinary scene can do so in many (tasty) ways. The most obvious option is to create a dine-around itinerary. Start by deciding on cuisine ~ such as Creole, seafood, international, old restaurants, etc., or perhaps one from each category, then find local restaurants, make reservations, and enjoy. Be sure to include getting a snowball (sno-ball) and enjoying a drink or cocktail from the Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone or a frozen libation from Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar, the oldest bar in the city.
However, for those who want to leave it up to professionals, check out food tours, which last about three hours. There are many in New Orleans. Some focus on the French Quarter, perfect for first-time visitors, while others venture out to nearby neighborhoods. Some include history, hauntings and cocktails. Again, the options are varied, and any one of the tours will satisfy palates.
Something fun for mothers and daughters is taking a class at a cooking school. Learn how to prepare authentic dishes from either live demonstrations or hands-on. Allot anywhere for two to three hours for the classes.
Remember to visit museums like the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB), which highlights the food culture of the South and the Sazerac House, which provides insight into New Orleans’ cocktail culture and cocktails in general.
Regarding accommodations in New Orleans, there’s something for all budgets. Rent an Airbnb, stay at a chain hotel or local boutique hotel or bed and breakfast.
Paris, France
Paris is a genre-bending vacation destination, with its immediately recognizable landmarks, beautiful museums, and shopping for every type of visitor. It can sometimes be easy to forget that Paris is also a foodie destination, with locals who prize culinary excellence at all levels of dining. Accordingly, a getaway to Paris this Mother’s Day would be the ultimate foodie city break.
Not only is the food in Paris fit to rival any destination in the world, there’s a food culture that is fun to settle into while visiting. Parisians love to eat seasonally, so your meals are likely to feature plenty of fresh fruits and veggies from local farms.
Sipping a glass of wine and people watching from a terrace is one of the most relaxing things to do in Paris. Breizh Cafe is a popular galette restaurant in Paris; from the terrace you can watch people with your mom and enjoy a laid back brunch or lunch.
For a traditional French meal that is sure to delight your mom, head to Le Florimond, a bistro a short walk from Champ de Mars. The menu is seasonal, so you’re sure to find vegetable-forward and tasty interpretations of classic French cuisine. No Parisian Mother’s Day getaway would be complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. You can even stay nearby in the Hôtel Le Walt, where some rooms face this iconic landmark. There, your mom could spend Mother’s Day sipping a cappuccino with a direct view of the Eiffel Tower, which is sure to make it a day she’ll never forget.
Seoul, Korea
Seoul is a smashing city with exciting cultural and historical attractions, great shopping and world-class infrastructure. Perhaps even more famous than its tourist sites, Seoul’s food and foodie scene is renowned worldwide. Food is likely to be a highlight of your Seoul trip.
Korea is an extremely safe travel destination, and if your mom loves food, teahouses, beauty products or shopping, you can’t go wrong with choosing Seoul for your mother’s day trip. Korea also celebrates Budha’s birthday in May, so the streets will be decked out in a rainbow of lanterns for the celebrations.
For food, put Gwangjang market on the top of your to-do list. This sprawling food market in Seoul is where you’ll find the best Korean street food all in one place. Must-try dishes are the binde-tteok (mung bean pancakes) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles).
Head over to Sanchon restaurant in the Insa-dong neighbourhood for a uniquely Korean meal. Here can sit on the floor and feast on a 16-course temple food meal prepared by a former monk. All dishes are vegan and use seasonal ingredients and mountain herbs. The whole dining experience is fantastic and something you’ll remember for a long time.
Love seafood? FRESH seafood? Then a visit to Noryangjin Fish Market is where you want to go. You’ll see rows and rows of tanks filled with sea creatures on the ground floor, just like an aquarium. These will all end up on a plate, though. Upstairs, you’ll find many restaurants serving sushi, sashimi, boiled crab, grilled clams, fried prawn, and of course, live baby octopus.
Meyongdong, Seoul’s famous shopping district and the best place to stay for visitors, is another great place for street food, especially at night. Hotel Prince has an excellent location close to the subway and right next to Meyongdong’s shopping and street food.
Relaxing Mother’s Day Trip Ideas
Lugano, Switzerland
For a Mother’s Day getaway in May, consider visiting Lugano Switzerland for a relaxing vacation together. May is a beautiful month to visit the city, which is easily reachable with a direct train from Milan Italy or Zurich Switzerland.
I personally recommend Lugano for your trip as you can experience the beauty of the Ticino canton very easily, such as if your mum is older or with walking difficulties. The city is mostly flat with a small but pretty city centre, which is also car free.
When it comes to food in Lugano, many restaurants are providing fresh Italian cuisine. So if you and your mum love pasta and pizza, Lugano is definitely worth it. A relaxing dinner recommendation would be to book a table at Tango Riforma or Spaghetti Pomodoro, else for those looking for a more special 3 course meal, head to Osteria Trani.
For those who like to relax while shopping, there is a good mix of stores ranging from 2nd hand gems to luxury high end stores. Alternatively, find yourself relaxing in the many green parks Lugano has to offer, with Parco Ciani the most popular and prettiest. It is located at the very end of the Lugano promenade walking area, right on the lake side. There is even a beach at the end for either dipping your toes or a fresh swim during May!
Finish your days with at least one aperol spritz and spa treatment at your hotel. For this, I recommend Villa Sassa Hotel, Residence & Spa located in the city centre. Their treatments are so heavenly. It is the ultimate place to relax and sleep while visiting Lugano.
Milford Sound, New Zealand
Carved into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is the perfect destination for a Mothers Day Getaway for adventure and nature lovers.
Located in the bottom corner of New Zealand, itself located in the bottom corner of most world maps, this place is remote, yet unbelievably beautiful. The soaring rugged mountain peaks plunge into the deep blue waters, as waterfalls stream down the sheer cliff faces and native bush envelopes you from all sides. Take to the water on board a short cruise or kayaking trip, keeping an eye out for the friendly dolphins that like to play amongst the wakes. Or strap on your boots and hit one of the area’s many day hikes, such as the Milford Track, Key Summit or Gertrude Saddle. Milford Sound is also the perfect place to spot many of New Zealand’s native birds, such as the cheeky kea, that love to play in the untouched forest. After a day of incredible adventure, treat your mom to dinner and a stay at the National Park’s premier accommodation, the Milford Lodge. Featuring river-side chalets and a restaurant highlighting local ingredients, this luxurious lodge nestled into the edge of the rainforest is just the place to switch off and spend some quality time with your mom.
And whilst it may be a little unusual to recommend visiting a place when the chances of rain are highest, it’s during the rain that this place really comes to life, with waterfalls popping out of nowhere to surround the fiord. With Milford Sound receiving the most rainfall of any month in May, it really is the perfect time and place to spend Mother’s Day.
Nice, France
For those craving a relaxing Mother’s Day getaway, consider vacationing in the beautiful coastal town of Nice, France. The city is known for its year-round moderate temperatures, bright blue waters, and vibrantly colored buildings, making it the ideal place to treat your mom to some much-needed rest and relaxation.
Plus, during the month of May, the summer crowds haven’t quite arrived and there are plenty of activities to do with your mom. For example, you can participate in La Fête des Mai, which is a festival in Nice that celebrates the arrival of Nice with lots of singing and dancing. Or, if you rather do something less active, peruse the shops and quaint cafes located within Nice’s Old Town. You can then spend some time at one of Nice’s beautiful beaches since they are right next to the city’s Old Town.
Alternatively, since Nice is so close to one of Europe’s smallest yet wealthiest countries, consider doing an excursion to Monaco! This way, you can briefly immerse yourself in all the glamour of Monaco!
And before you leave the French Riviera, be sure to taste some of the local flavors, such as a traditional Nicoise salad. This is one of Nice’s most popular dishes, and restaurants everywhere can be found serving this regional favorite.
So, if you’re ready to start planning your getaway to Nice, be sure to check out Hotel Suisse Nice for places to stay. It’s situated directly on the waterfront and offers stunning views of Nice’s bay!
Tamarindo, Costa Rica
On the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica lies Tamarindo – a laid-back, beautiful beach town that’s perfect for relaxing. They take the ‘pura vida’ lifestyle seriously, so it’s perfect for a relaxing mother’s day getaway!
The beaches of Costa Rica are famous for their beauty, and Tamarindo is surrounded by them. Relax on the beach with a fresh coconut in hand or get out in the water and learn to surf! If you prefer just enjoying the water, then a sunset Catamaran cruise is perfect. With stops at other beaches for snorkeling, you can enjoy the peaceful wildlife while taking in the incredible views.
In the evening, make a trip to El Mercadito, an open-air food court in the heart of Tamarindo. They have everything from traditional Costa Rican dishes to Argentinian, Poke, and even crepes! The main street of Tamarindo has plenty of restaurants if you prefer to sit in an actual restaurant. Try the seafood as it’s usually freshly caught that day!
Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Tamarindo on your mother’s day trip and make it one to remember forever.

All-of-the-Above Mother’s Day Trip Ideas
Cartegena, Colombia
Cartagena, Colombia should definitely be considered one of the best Mother’s Day Getaway ideas. With a vibrant culture, fascinating history, nearby gorgeous beaches, and great food, it offers a bit of everything.
Highlights include walking the picturesque streets of the colonial Walled City and the neighboring Getsemaní historic district. Mom will love staying in one of the lovely Cartagena boutique hotels in the historic part of the city. The Softel Santa Clara and Charleston Santa Teresa, both in former convents, are particular standouts.
This is also where you will find many of the the best cafes and restaurants. Some particular standouts are the Bona Vida Marisquería, which serves up eclectic seafood dishes, Carmen, which offers terrific fine dining, and Candé which serves delicious food inspired by traditional Cartagena recipes.
You’ll want to make sure you take in the gorgeous sunsets over the Caribbean while in Cartagena as well. Café del Mar, located atop a section of the wall, is a great place to do so, as is the rooftop bar at Hotel Movich with its amazing view of the bay. Another great way to enjoy sunset is with a sunset cruise on the bay, which offers great views of the city lit up in the early evening.
Finally, you can’t miss doing either a day trip or staying for a night or two out in the nearby Rosario Islands. These coral islands are surrounded by crystal clear water and offer the best beaches in Cartagena. Doing a private boat rental is amazing, but you can also do a terrific catamaran cruise. If you’d like to spend the night, Las Islas and the Sofitel Calablanca offer luxury resort-style experiences, while IslaBela offers a more rustic feel.
Essaouira, Morocco
Essaouira is one of the most beautiful coastal cities in Morocco. Once known under the name of the “Windy City”, Essaouira offers everything to its visitors, which makes it a fantastic destination for a Mother’s Day trip. In May, when the rest of Morocco is starting to get really hot, the ocean breeze keeps Essaouira pleasant. There are so many things to do in Essaouira, that will make your mom happy!
Essaouira is a historical city, with plenty of history. The city used to be one of the major ports on the Atlantic side of Africa, which meant that many cultures passed and left their mark here. Essaouira is Moroccan but feels quite European as well. Some of the city walls with their towers and cannons facing the sea are still standing and can be visited free of charge.
Essaouira is also a great place to learn how to surf. Due to the wind but also the protected bay, the waves are quite small which makes it a great place for beginners. There are many surfing schools alongside the beach from where you and your mom can book affordable lessons which include the equipment.
After a day full of adrenaline, there is nothing better than a visit to the hammam, for a rejuvenating scrub and a relaxing massage.
And, if your mom is a foodie, you should know that Essaouira is one of the best places in Morocco for seafood. In the morning you can watch the charming blue boats coming into the harbour with the catch of the day, which you will enjoy later on at one of the restaurants in town. A nice place to go for a traditional Moroccan meal in Essaouira is Keltoum, a four-table-only establishment that serves fresh fish dishes. The dish to order is the chermoula stuffed sardines.
To treat your mom in this trip, book a room at the luxurious Riad Dar Maya.
Reykjavik, Iceland
One underrated city that is perfect for a Mother’s Day trip is the capital of Iceland – Reykjavik. It’s the northernmost capital in the world and has something to offer everyone.
May is a great time to visit Reykjavik because the weather is getting warmer, but there aren’t the crowds of summer. You’ll have plenty of time and space to explore. I recommend spending at least three days in Reykjavik so you get a feel for the city. Then you can get otu of the city and explore places like Vik in the south.
Nature lovers would enjoy seeing the famous Skogafoss waterfall just outside the city, or visiting Thingvillir National Park where you can walk between two tectonic plates! Adventurers can get in the water and actually swim between them at Silfra! While you can’t see the northern lights in May, you can see plenty of unique nature in Iceland such as hot springs and volcanos to icebergs dotting the sand at Diamond beach. Iceland truly is the land of ice and fire.
For an incredible meal featuring Icelandic specialties, head to Grillmarkurdurin for their tasting menu. Enjoy everything from puffin to minke whale!
Singapore, Singapore
Located near the equator, Singapore is a melting pot of cultures derived from India, China, Malaysia, and other countries. While it’s hot in May, you could enjoy the World Gourmet Summit and Vesak Day.
During the gourmet summit, you can savor an explosion of tastes from fine eateries in the city. To celebrate Mother’s Day, consider an intimate Raffles Hotel afternoon tea. Dating back to 1887, the colonial hotel offers a walk through history in its opulent establishment.
A Buddhist festival, Vesak Day commemorates the birth of Gautama Buddha. Head to Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown to be part of the celebration. Here, you can immerse yourself in Buddhist culture by visiting the museum on the third floor.
Since Chinatown contains mostly food stalls, it’s an ideal place to find a Hawker market for some yummy eats. Be sure to try the Rendang Chicken and Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at the Maxwell Food Center.
The War Trails Walking Tour at Fort Canning is a must-see for those interested in military history. Begin at the former British Military Barracks site of 1926, which now houses the Fort Canning Center. On this Singapore walking tour, you’ll step back through time as you explore how this historical area has shaped Singapore’s military legacy.
For the adventurous, use the Singapore cable car to reach Sentosa Island. Here, you can spend a day at Universal Studios Singapore and even do a bungee jump. Additionally, the island offers a little of everything from the pristine Palawan Beach to excellent spas if you prefer to chill with your mom.
For accommodation, YOTEL Singapore offers a central location on Orchard Road that won’t break the bank. Being on Orchard Road, you will be steps away from Singapore’s best shopping area.
Tokyo, Japan
For a truly unique Mother’s Day getaway, why not visit the incredible city of Tokyo. With so much to offer visitors, your Mother’s Day trip will be one to remember forever.
Tokyo truly has it all – from historic temples like Senso-ji, to mouthwatering food, relaxing spas, and learning to be a ninja! Get your day started early to visit the Senso-ji Temple so you can avoid the crowds and enjoy some peace. The architecture is truly stunning. It’s powerful to see the city skyline in the background, it shows how Tokyo has changed but also respects its history.
Art lovers would love the Teamlabs experience which you get to interact with art in a variety of ways – from crawling through an exhibit to wading in ankle-deep water- it was an epic experience that I recommend to anyone visiting this city. Of course, the food in Japan is indescribable. From freshly caught fish for sushi to steaming hot ramen, you won’t be disappointed. One of the most unique dining experiences we had was convertor belt sushi. We got to watch the chef put the sushi together and then got to try as much of it as we wanted. You pay based on the color of the plates. It was an awesome way to try new sushi one bite at a time!
While the city can be overstimulating, there are plenty of day trips from Tokyo that are great to get a break from the city.
A Mother’s Day getaway to Tokyo will be one that she remembers forever!
