Annapolis, Maryland
Nestled comfortably in the heart of the east coast, Annapolis is often an overlooked travel destination. The quaint city has plenty to offer for a great mother’s day trip in the US.
Wear your comfortable shoes because it’s easy to walk around Annapolis, and you’ll get a better feel for the city anyway. By walking, you’ll be able to see numerous historic buildings and landmarks including William Paca’s House & Garden. Nearby, you’ll find the Maryland State House. It’s the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use (and it’s open for tours!). Even if you don’t go in, the building is stunning from the outside.
Art loving-moms will enjoy visiting the numerous galleries in downtown Annapolis. On the first Sunday of every month (between May and October), there is the First Sunday Arts Festival on Calver and West Street. It’s one of the best free things to do in Annapolis, and a great way to see local artists in action!
Don’t forget to try the local delicacy – seafood! Maryland is known for their crabs so pop in anywhere along Main Street and indulge yourself. Relax with a drink at the Red Red Wine Bar (which does serve more than wine) and is one of my favorite places in the city.
With a lot of history, a beautiful waterfront, and a vibrant art scene, Annapolis is a great Mother’s Day getaway!
Arches National Park, Utah
If you and your momma are adventurous, outdoor-loving souls then, for Mother’s Day, you can’t beat an exciting outdoor weekend in Arches National Park.
Not only is the weather perfect at this time of year since highs are around 79F and lows are around 48F, but crowds are minimal since visitation really doesn’t pick up until June.
Therefore, you and your mom can experience some of the best hikes in Arches National Park relatively undisturbed. So, be sure to check out iconic locations like Delicate Arch, Park Avenue, and Devil’s Garden.
Also, be sure to take plenty of photos as you admire the incredible La Sal Mountains in the distance.
And because light pollution will be minimal, you’ll have no problem doing a bit of star gazing at The Windows, the Garden of Eden Viewpoint, and Panorama Point.
Just remember to bring plenty of sunscreen and water with you since this amazing national park sits 5,653 feet in the air. Therefore, the high elevation of the park makes it incredibly easy to get dehydrated.
You’ll also want to spend at least two days in the park so that you have plenty of time to see Balanced Rock, Fiery Furnace, the Windows, and more.
So, when you’re not out exploring the park, be sure to head back to nearby Moab and spend the night at Under Canvas Moab. It’s a fantastic, luxury camping resort that is located just 6 miles away from Arches.
Biltmore Estates, Asheville, North Carolina
Biltmore Estates, located in Asheville, North Carolina, would make the perfect destination for a May getaway, especially for those wanting to celebrate Mother’s Day with their mom. There are several reasons why Biltmore Estates is an ideal place for a trip in May, including the weather and the range of activities available.
The historic estate offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural attractions that are sure to please any mother.
May weather at Biltmore Estates is warm and mild with average temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the mid-70s. The Biltmore estate is known for its beautiful gardens and landscapes that are in full bloom during this time of year, making it an excellent opportunity to enjoy a scenic walk through the estate’s grounds.
During your visit, be sure to explore the estate’s many cultural attractions, including the Biltmore House, a grand chateau-style mansion, one of the most popular activities at Biltmore Estates is the guided house tour, which takes visitors through the stunning historic mansion that was built in the late 19th century by George Vanderbilt.
Biltmore Estates offers a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and visiting a world-class winery, which offers wine tastings and tours, making it a perfect activity for wine enthusiasts.

Active moms and those who are drawn to the more eccentric parts of life will love a getaway to Boulder.
One of the advantages of choosing to visit Boulder is the option to hike, sometimes from the door to your hotel. Choose a hotel near Pearl Street, like the Hotel Boulderado, for the option to walk from your room to the top of Royal Arch or through Chautauqua State Park. Alternatively, you can hop in the car and head towards the Fourth of July trail, a local favorite that offers views of an alpine lake from the summit.
When you’re not adventuring in the outdoors, take some time to wander along Pearl Street, the city’s central pedestrian mall. Chocolate lovers should be sure to try a truffle or homemade chocolate bar from Piece, Love and Chocolate on west Pearl. For a unique gift, make a stop at Liberty Puzzles, where they sell wooden jigsaw puzzles with pieces cut into creative shapes.
If you’re not out hiking on Saturday morning, make your way to the Boulder Farmers Market. The market is a favorite among locals, and it’s packed with local fruits and veggies, along with vendors from several local restaurants.
For Mother’s Day brunch, head to Lucile’s Cafe. Set in an old house and covered in New Orleans decor, this southern breakfast joint has long been a local favorite. They have fabulous bloody marys, homemade biscuits with strawberry rhubarb jam, and even chicory coffee. The menu features southern favorites like shrimp and grits, andouille sausage, and red beans.
Calistoga, California (Napa Wine Country)
Celebrating Mother’s Day in Napa Valley is a special experience. From rolling vineyards to picturesque wineries and delicious cuisine, this world-renowned region offers a perfect setting to relax, indulge, and unwind.
Not only is Napa Valley filled with activities mom will love, but May also has some of wine country’s best weather. You’ll find clear skies, beautiful new blooms, and bright green vines coming back to life.
Sparkling wines are perfect for special occasions, so what better way to kick off your visit than with a tasting at Mumm Napa? You’ll enjoy stunning outdoor seating with breathtaking vineyard views. It’s an ideal setting for you and your mom to toast each other.
After savoring the flavors of Napa Valley’s finest wines, head north to experience the area’s trademark spa treatments. Carlsbad, California
If you’re looking for a relaxing place to treat your mom for a Mother’s Day getaway, consider making your way to the coastal town of Carlsbad in Southern California! There are many exciting things to do in Charleston, SC, where you can enjoy your best time with the most admired person in the world – your mother. You can go for a vintage horse carriage tour of historic downtown Charleston. If you are your Mother is a history buff, visiting several colorful homes in historic downtown Charleston is worth learning about the colonial era of the USA and how this city played a significant role in ancient times. There are historical museums and several ghost tours late at night to have great spooky fun.
There are several blooming plantations on the outskirts of Charleston which are perfect for half-day tours. The most famous is Magnolia’s plantations and Boone’s Plantations, as they have guided tours of historic houses, plantations tours, and many more.

There are numerous activities that are perfect for a mother daughter weekend. Shopping on the infamous Magnificent Mile as well as State Street offer plenty of high end boutiques and stores. The mile-long stretch is home to some of the city’s most popular stores, including Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdale’s. You can also find a variety of specialty shops, restaurants, and cafes along the Magnificent Mile.
A river cruise on the Chicago River is an amazing experience. The tour takes you along the Chicago River, where you can see some of the city’s most iconic buildings, including the Willis Tower and the Opera House. In May, wildflowers are blooming, making for a picturesque experience that is sure to make your mom feel special.
Visiting the Great Smoky Mountain National Park on mother’s day will provide you and your mom with plenty of activities to do. Take a scenic drive along Clingman’s Dome Road, where stunning views of the valleys below await. For more active exploration, take a hike on one of the many trails that wind through the park, such as the Alum Cave Trail or the Andrews Bald Trail. Hawai’i, Hawaii (Big Island)
The Big Island of Hawaii is an incredible option for a mother-daughter getaway, perfectly blending outdoor adventure and luxurious relaxation— all in a tropical paradise. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to visit the Big Island, with warm temperatures, clear skies, and lower crowds than the busy summer months.
One of the best activities on the Big Island is snorkeling through its gorgeous and colorful coral reefs, like in Kealakekua Bay, the largest Marine Life Conservation District in the state. Here, you can find hundreds of species of fish, sea turtles, and, if you’re lucky, even spinner dolphins! The only way you can get to this incredible protected bay is by boating in on a tour, or, if you’re more active travelers, hike in along the 4-mile long Captain Cook Monument Trail.
Another unique activity on the Big Island is visiting Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, home to Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on the planet, and Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. Depending on the intensity of activity you’re up for, you can drive to scenic overlooks to see steaming vents, hike through ancient lava tubes, or even walk across a crater floor itself. While you’re visiting the park, consider getting lunch at Tuk Tuk Thai Food Truck, right outside its gates. Hawaii is big on food trucks, so you’ll be getting to enjoy a little slice of the islands’ culture—plus, the food is really delicious!
To relax from all of your adventures, consider staying at the Royal Kona Resort, just steps away from the charming town of Kona. It’s right along the beach and has a spa where you two can indulge in a massage or two!
Juneau, Alaska
North of Canada, Alaska is often a forgotten destination for those in the lower states. However, in May, Juneau emerges from winter and provides one of the driest months to immerse yourselves in unique adventures with your mom.
The Juneau International Airport is 8 miles north of downtown, and you don’t need a car when visiting. The Four Points by Sheraton Juneau provides an ideal location close to dining.
Take the Roberts Tramway from the waterfront to Mount Roberts on a clear day. The views are spectacular on the ride up and from the peak. You can take a short ½ mile alpine trail from the Mountain House, which features some totem carvings.
Alternatively, you can take a longer trek to Father Brown Cross. In May, the trail may be muddy, so wear appropriate footwear. From the flat spot at the cross, you’ll savor spectacular views of the Gastineau Channel.
A trip to Mendenhall Glacier is one of Juneau’s popular activities. Shuttles buses run from downtown and get you to the park in under ½ hour. While Mendenhall Glacier has rapidly receded, you can learn its history in the visitors’ center. If you’re up for a stroll, the trail to Nugget Falls is easy and flat and puts you at the foot of a thundering cascade.
If you prefer a more leisurely activity with mom, May signals the start of whale watching season. With humpbacks arriving daily from Hawaii, you’re guaranteed to see the gentle giants on a whale-watching tour.
Treat your mom to a feast at Tracy’s Crab Shack if you love seafood. While pricey, the crab legs and cakes are fantastic, but be prepared to wait for a table.
Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles may be a surprising destination for Mother’s Day, but there are several reasons why this city is actually a great destination in May that make it a worthwhile trip with your mom.
First, May is a sweet spot for crowd levels and weather in Los Angeles. Schools are not out for summer yet, so you’ll enjoy your activities with your mom with less crowds. This makes it more relaxing and a more intimate experience. Additionally, because summer hasn’t hit the city yet, the temperatures are cooler with averages in the mid-70s.
May is also the perfect time to see gardens in bloom in Los Angeles of which there are many! The best and most popular is The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens with stunning themed Japanese and Chinese gardens. It’s beautiful and peaceful, just what every hard-working mother needs! Plus, you can enjoy the Rose Garden Tea Room for a delightful snack and beverage. The gardens also make a perfect backdrop to take Mother’s Day photos in Los Angeles so you can always remember your time spent together.
In addition to The Huntington, Los Angeles is home to a Rose Garden in Exposition Park, the Descanso Gardens with another stunning Japanese garden to stroll, and The Arboretum, where moms will love relaxing by the ponds and fountains.
If your mom is up for a foodie adventure, Grand Central Market is home to tens of vendors with a range of delicious eats. Sarita’s Pupuseria has some of the best pupusas in Los Angeles and Donut Man is famous for its strawberry-filled donut!
Alternatively, visit Castaway Restaurant in Burbank for dinner and drinks with a beautiful city view.
Because Los Angeles is so large, there are plenty of places to stay. Silver Lake is a good central area with easy access by car to everywhere in the city. For a more quiet and intimate stay, try Pasadena such as The Langham Huntington.
Nashville, Tennessee
Nashville, Tennessee, is one of the best destinations for moms and daughters to visit for Mother’s Day in the United States — especially if your mom loves country music, trendy restaurants, and southern charm!
May is a gorgeous time to visit Nashville. The temperatures have warmed up to a balmy 79°F during the day, but the sticky summer humidity has yet to set in, so you won’t get overheated while walking around and exploring the top attractions in Nashville.
First, plan a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum to learn more about Nashville’s rich country music history. Then, just a few footsteps away, spend the afternoon hopping into the bars and honky-tonks on Broadway Street.
Whether you and your mom want to enjoy a cocktail at Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar or line-dance the night away at the Wildhorse Saloon, you’re sure to have a memorable night together!
If you’re looking for something low-key to do during the day, you can enjoy brunch, go boutique shopping, or grab ice cream in one of Nashville’s most adorable neighborhoods — 12 South. If your mom is interested in antique shopping or Civil War history, the two of you should take a day trip to Franklin — an adorable southern town right outside of Nashville.
When you’re hungry, stop by Biscuit Love for brunch (try the bonuts!), or head to Hattie B’s Hot Chicken for some Nashville Hot Chicken. Your mom will love staying at The Graduate Hotel in Nashville. Plan a day at the rooftop pool themed after Dolly Parton, White Limozeen, and get coffee at Poindexter Coffee, the trendy coffee shop in the hotel’s lobby.
Newport, Rhode Island
The quaint seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island is a wonderful destination to visit in May. You’ll have warmer weather without the summer crowds. This makes it a great mother’s day trip idea in the United States.
One of the best things to do in Newport is tour the Newport Mansions. Many of these historic mansions are open to the public, such as The Breakers. Get a glimpse into America’s past during the Gilded Age (and see where the inspiration from the show came from!). While you’re near the mansions, take a stroll along the Cliff Walk for stunning coastal views.
Be sure to spend some time in the downtown area of Newport. You’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, galleries, and souvenir stores to appease to any shopper. We love the Lobster pot and the Cookie Jar.
If the weather is nice, you can get out on the water. Newport is known as the sailing capital of the world so take a sailing tour or rent your own boat and explore the harbor.
New York City, New York
New York City is a fantastic Mother’s Day destination with many unique things to do. In May, the weather is mild, the flowers are in full bloom, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Whether you are into museums, musicals, food, or nature, there is something your mom will love!
One of the best activities to do in May is to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The garden is home to over 10,000 species of plants and features a Japanese Garden, a Cherry Esplanade, and a Rose Garden. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom in May, transporting you into a dazzling world of pink and white. Take a stroll through the gardens and enjoy the natural beauty!
For a more cultural experience, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum is home to over 2 million works of art from around the world. Spend time admiring everything from gorgeous Greek sculptures to famous impressionist pieces. The Met also has a rooftop garden that opens in May, where you can enjoy a drink while taking in the views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.
No trip to New York is complete without trying one of the city’s many famous restaurants! For a special Mother’s Day dinner, head to Oxalis. This New American Michelin-star restaurant is close to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and provides a lovely atmosphere with impeccable service. The carte blanche menu changes seasonally and includes up to ten delicious courses, including appetizers, mains, and desserts. The food is unique and prepared with the highest quality ingredients.
Though there are many great accommodations in NYC, one of the best places to stay is the Plaza Hotel in the heart of Manhattan. This luxurious 5-star hotel with a rich history is known for its exceptional service. It will surely make your mother feel special with its impeccable decor and endless amenities. Don’t forget to book a massage at their spa as an extra treat!
Pawhuska, Oklahoma
Pawhuska is a town hidden away in northeast Oklahoma. Because it’s a bit off the beaten path, most folks have never heard of it, but it’s a foodie paradise.
The town has hosted the likes of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio during movie productions and is home to Ree Drummong, the self-professed Pioneer Woman of Food Network fame.
Her food (and influence) have shaped the tourism industry in the town. So while at its heart, Pawhuska is small town with a down-home atmosphere, its got a bit of glitz and glam that make it more fun than your typical American hamlet.
When you’re here, make sure to stop in at the Pioneer Woman’s Mercantile, Ree’s southern-style restaurant and gift shop. The food is fantastic and the gift shop is a great place to find a last-minute gift for your mom (or daughter).
Other great things to do in Pawhuska include venturing out to Bluestem Falls and touring the Pioneer Woman’s Lodge, the tv studio on the Drummond Ranch where Ree films her show. Tours are free. Just check in at the Mercantile early in the day to get on the list.
If you want more great places to eat, Ree also owns P-Town Pizza across from the Mercantile – both are great options!
At night you can check into the Frontier Hotel for a luxurious stay in the middle of Rural America.
Port Aransas, Texas
Port Aransas, the small beach town located on the tip of Mustang Island, is the perfect place if you want a quiet coastal getaway without the crowds.
While it’s not a secret to locals, you can find stretches of beach all to yourself at places like Mustang Island State Park and even at the nearby Padre Island National Seashore!
The town itself is cute and colorful, with brightly painted beach houses covered in beach puns and twinkle lights. The town projects a summer take on cozy that is both feminine and fun.
Because the fishing is better in late summer, May is a great time to visit. The water is warm enough to swim in, but the town is still a bit sleepy. When you have had enough of your time at the beach, there are tons of shell shops, galleries, and boutiques to enjoy.
Make sure to enjoy a meal at Snoopy’s Pier. It’s technically located over the border in Corpus Christi, but it’s a classic island seafood place that you cannot miss!
There aren’t many hotels on the island, which is one of the reasons it’s a bit of a hidden gem. Look for vacation rentals or check into the Plantation Suites, a pet-friendly hotel with a pool in a great location.
Sarasota, Florida
Relaxing white sand beaches, peaceful spa treatments, high-end shopping, and dining. Your mom deserves it all and you can make it happen for her in Sarasota, Florida.

During your stay in this charming southern town, you’ll want a convenient place to stay so you can easily explore the area. Seattle is a cool little town located in the Pacific Northwest. It offers tons of things to see and do, great places to eat, and a fun yet easygoing atmosphere. May is a great time to visit as the spring temperatures are comfortable and it’s just before the busy summer tourist season starts.
While on your trip to Seattle be sure to visit Pike’s Place Market. With the fresh flowers and fish for sale, gum wall, original Starbucks, and its waterfront location, a visit to Pike’s Place Market is a quintessential Seattle experience.

What mom-daughter combo won’t benefit from starting the day sipping a Honey Lavender Latte at the Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails shop with a pastry? Then head out for a shopping spree on the award-winning Florida Main Street in the Edge District.
Check out clothes, art, sculpture, and jewelry. Or buy honey at A Bee’s Place to take home. Next walk down to the harbor, stroll along the waterfront, sit on a bench, and talk. The latter is what makes a mom-daughter getaway to celebrate her holiday so special. Be sure to leave time for the Waterfront Museum District to explore the Dali Museum, the St. Petersburg Museum of History, and the Museum of Fine Arts. St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
St Thomas and St John US Virgin Islands in May is great – the crowds are slowing down as you enter the off-season in June but there’s very little rainy fall. The weather is still dry and warm.
It’s the perfect Mother’s Day getaway idea for spending quality time at the beach and a great place for shopping. There’s a $1600 duty-free tax in USVI, and Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas has shops for miles. Yacht Haven St Thomas is a port lined with luxury clothing and jewelry shops. If you’re not a shopper, you can go watch the yachts and boats sail in and out of the marina. And, it’s one of the few Caribbean islands that you don’t need a passport to visit.
There are also tons of St John and St. Thomas tours to choose from. You can visit Cas Cay and kayak, snorkel, and hike around the Mangrove Lagoon. Virgin Islands National Park is also full of hikes that lead to wonderfully secluded beaches.
The protected lands and waters of Virgin Islands National Park is an incredible place to snorkel in the Caribbean. There are ruins and museums to explore on each island. St Thomas is home to the 99 Steps to Blackbeard’s Castle and the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere.
When you go to St John, visiting skinny legs in Coral Bay is a must. It’s an open-air bar with spectacular views of the ocean. Secret Harbour Beach Resort is a beautiful beachfront hotel in Red Hook. From Red Hook, you have easy access to the ferry to St John.
Zion National Park, Utah
Zion National Park is unique in that the charming town of Springdale lies adjacent to the park entrance. This means you can book yourself into one of the many boutique hotels along the river and spend the mornings exploring and the evenings pampering yourself at the spa or enjoying a glass of wine over dinner. It truly provides the best of both worlds for an adventurous (but not too adventurous) Mother’s Day getaway.
Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to visit Zion National Park as the weather is mild, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and the crowds are smaller than during the peak summer season. Additionally, the park’s shuttle system is up and running, making it easy to explore without having to worry about driving (and therefore, parking).
When visiting Zion National Park over Mother’s Day, don’t miss the opportunity to hike the Riverside Walk, an easy two-mile out-and-back trail that meanders along the Virgin River. It ends where The Narrows begins.
Another must-do is the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway, a 26-mile scenic byway that offers a number of impressive viewpoints and overlooks. The road passes through a historic 5,000-foot tunnel leading to highlights like Canyon Overlook Trail and Checkerboard Mesa. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch wherever you fancy.

The list is quite varied – from Alaska, to Hawaii to North Carolina so there are certainly a lot of options here.

What a fantastic list of Mother’s Day trip ideas! It’s so inspirational. I want to take my mom to one of those places. Some of them I visited and loved. But some are still on my bucket list. As my mom loves flowers, I would like to show her flower fields in Carlsbad, and I would like to take her for wine tasting. Also, she would enjoy a trip to Hawaii.
Trips for Mother’s Day are very American and I know the UK gift them occasionally, too. It’s not really a European thing and in most cases mum’s get cards or flowers on the day. If I was American and had to chose a trip I would most likely take her to Hawaii and relax for a few days on the beach. My mum is still a workaholic and she needs to slow down.

Excellent proposals for Mother’s Day! I took mine a few years ago to visit New York and she loved exploring the Big Apple.
I’m sure she would love any of the suggestions, but especially Arches National Park in Utah, Carlsbad, California for the food and the flowery fields, and also Big Island in Hawaii. ahhh and Savannah, Georgia too, for the atmosphere!
Basically my mom really likes to travel and if I show her this list she’ll want to go to all the places proposed 🙂
