When do Tourists Typically Visit Lucerne?

Lucerne is a beautiful destination that appeals to tourists year-round, no matter what season. With its moderately continental climate, featuring warm summers and cold winters, there’s something for everyone in this charming Swiss city. During the summer months of June to August, temperatures rise and Lucerne becomes an ideal holiday destination as the lake warms up sufficiently for swimming. It’s during this popular time when Lucerne tends to be very busy with visiting tourists who come to enjoy picturesque lakeside villages, world-class sightseeing, and sampling delicious Swiss cuisine.

If you want your visit to Lucerne less crowded than usual during summer but still want to experience all that this gorgeous city has to offer then visiting in either May or early September is recommended. Although the weather might not be as conducive for swimming these are great times of year with typical daily highs ranging from 16°C (61°F) in May and 18°C (64°F) in September. During this time, temperatures average around 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, with an expected snowfall every now and then. Rainfall is very rare in these months, as January, February, and March are often some of the lowest rainfall months in Lucerne. Its surprisingly mild climate makes it well-suited for all kinds of winter activities. We visited at the end of December, and it was magical!

From hockey games on Lake Lucerne or ice skating at Glacier Garden Lucerne to traditional Christmas markets or even attending one of the biggest jazz festivals in Europe – there’s something for everyone.

Lucerne in Spring

Visiting Lucerne in the spring is a great opportunity to experience a city full of culture and breathtaking natural beauty. With the replacement of cold winter months, warm comfortable days take over ranging from March to June – perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring. April is especially ideal—the snow has melted, and flowers are beginning to bloom. In preparation of summer traffic, this is also the season that cable cars and cog trains undergo maintenance to guarantee visitors’ safety when operating them later in the year.

The scenery around Lucerne combined with its mild temperatures make it even more inviting during these months!
