Bordeaux is situated in the South West of France and is the sixth largest city, often referred to as a smaller version of Paris. Sitting on the Garonne River, it’s the capital of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
And without a doubt, one of the biggest wine regions attracting many tourists over the summer months, making fall the perfect time to visit.
Not only are there fewer people but the weather in September and October is lovely, with those beautiful fall colours coming into their own.
One of the most anticipated festivals of the year happens in October, Fête du vin Nouveau et de la Brocante, which combines two of the country’s big loves, wine and markets.
Held in the heart of Chartons, Rue Notre-Dame is filled with traders, hot chestnut stalls, street artists and more. All the shops and restaurants are open, and there is dancing in the street.
But Bordeaux isn’t just about the wine. It also has a reputation for being a big foodie city, so gastronomy is a large part of any visit.
And you can’t visit Bordeaux without a trip to L’Entrecõte restaurant, famous for, you guessed it, entrecõte. This steak dish is a delicacy of Bordeaux, and for this particular restaurant, it’s the only dish on the menu and served with the most divine mustard sauce.
Bordeaux is also home to La Cité du Vin, a wine museum over eight floors, located in an architecturally designed building designed to represent wine being poured into a glass. The views from the top floor are stunning, and you can enjoy a glass of wine whilst looking out over the city.

Brasov, Romania
One of the best places to visit during the Autumn season in Europe is Brasov, Romania! Brasov is a small and charming city nestled in the mountains of Transylvania. It’s only a short bus ride away from the famous “Dracula’s Castle”, which is one of the reasons why October is a must-visit!
Each year Dracula’s Castle (officially known as Bran Castle) holds a Halloween party with a costume contest, music and a feast of food. It’s a great way to celebrate the spooky season! The castle is also open all year round offering guided and self-guided tours around the rooms with information about Bram Stoker’s novel and Vlad the Impaler.
Alongside visiting the popular castle, Brasov’s Old Town is incredible to explore with Gothic churches and orange-topped buildings within the city walls. It’s best to spend 2 days in Brasov to see the city, Bran Castle and admire the views from Tâmpa Peak – one of the green mountains surrounding the Old Town.
Tâmpa Peak is the perfect hike to do in September-October when the weather is cool and the trees are starting to turn. If you’re not a fan of hiking, there’s also a cable car that goes to the top, so you don’t have to miss out on the views of the Carpathian Mountains.
The city has an airport, however, it’s best to arrive in Bucharest and catch a train to the mountains – the views are incredible! The prices in Romania are pretty affordable, especially when travelling during the Autumn months.
Brussels, Belgium
Brussels is a magnificent city at any time of the year but in the fall it becomes extra pleasant because of the beautiful fall foliage colors in the park in and around the city. Must-dos that are on everyone’s bucket list when visiting Brussels are exploring La Grand Place, with its late 17th century eclectic mix of baroque and gothic architecture, and paying a visit to the quirky statues of Manneke Pis and Jeanneke Pis.
But for true autumn vibes, the best places to check out in Brussels are the Atomium, which offers great photo opportunities in autumn, and the Sonian Forest, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive groves of beech and oak trees.
Brussels also hosts a large variety of festivals in autumn like the Art+People by Nuit Blanche festival, an art concept highlighting specific neighborhoods in Brussels, and Artonov Festival, an interdisciplinary art festival held in Art Deco and Art Nouveau building and other local venues of unique architecture in Brussels.
When traveling to Belgium, you cannot leave without having tried Belgian beer, fries, and waffles. You can find a wide variety of beers and local appetizers in Café de Monk near the Church of Saint Catherine. For fries, your best bet is the artisan “frietkot” called Patatak located next to La Bourse which is also one of the best restaurants in Brussels for vegan travelers. Waffles are found at various locations around La Grand Place with Maison Dandoy being a favorite among tourists.
A great accommodation option in Brussels is Jardin Secret. Not only are the rooms fantastic but it also offers a year-round heated outdoor pool.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Scandinavian cities are notorious for being expensive, and Copenhagen is no exception. But visiting Denmark’s capital and largest city in the fall makes the flight and hotel cost significantly cheaper.
Fall is an amazing time to visit Copenhagen not just to cut costs, but the weather has that nice chilliness in the air that flushes your cheeks without the frigid temperatures that have yet to enter the winter months. As the day rolls around, it starts to get warmer, especially as you are walking or biking around the city.
Danish culture puts a huge emphasis on hygge, or feelings of coziness and warmth. So it’s no surprise that Christmas markets in Copenhagen start as early as November. Expect to see Christmas decor and lights illuminating Nyhavn (Copenhagen’s most visited and photographed attraction), Højbro Plads, Nytorv, and Tivoli Gardens. Don’t forget to order a cup of gløgg (Scandinavian mulled wine) and æbleskiver (deep-fried pancake balls) for that extra hygglelig factor as you people watch.
For a low-cost accommodation that feels luxurious, stay in Motel One Copenhagen. Despite the name, it is in line with most 4-star hotels with its plush bed that feels like clouds, whimsical decor, and breakfast buffet offering delicious and healthy fare. Motel One Copenhagen is also around the corner from Strøget, the longest pedestrian-only shopping street in the world. It’s also down the street from a train station, Copenhagen City Hall, and Tivoli Gardens.
Cotswolds, England
One of England’s most enchanting regions, the Cotswolds unveils its true charm in the vibrant hues of autumn. This picturesque area, renowned for its idyllic scenery and villages, becomes a fairytale destination during the autumn season. The villages, with their thatched-roof cottages and Cotswolds stone churches, are enhanced by the autumn foliage in places like Castle Combe and Bourton on the Water.
The Cheltenham Literature Festival is on in October, featuring captivating talks and workshops by renowned authors. Additionally, the Cotswolds’ National Trust sites grant access to magnificent stately homes like Dyrham Park and Snowshill Manor, immersing visitors in the region’s rich history. The area also boasts an abundance of scenic walking trails, with the Broadway Tower path offering a particularly breathtaking journey accompanied by panoramic views over the Cotswold landscape.

Epernay, France
If you are interested in wine and have always been curious about the Champagne region in France, I suggest visiting Epernay for some champagne tasting during autumn.
While the summer is very lively in this town, autumn is an ideal season to visit it since you will be able to witness the harvest season. The harvest lasts for around two weeks, somewhere around September or October. The exact harvest dates will depend on the amount of sunshine the vineyards received during summer though, and climate change is making harvesting dates start increasingly early.
In this season, you will be able to admire the vineyards changing colors from green to gold, plus there will still be some grapes left after the harvest. The vines will be ready to start a new cycle.
During your visit, you will be able to stroll around the Avenue de Champagne and visit some of the most famous Champagne houses for champagne tours without all the summer crowds. You can also rent a bike and tour around the surrounding countryside, and the weather will be ideal.
Epernay also has some top restaurants, with around 20 places being listed on the Michelin guide! If you are into haut-cuisine, I suggest trying Symbiose.
If you want to stay in a hotel with beautiful views of the vineyards, I recommend staying on the outskirts of Epernay. Hotel Les Grains d’Argent Dizy is a good option.
Granada, Spain
Granada is a beautiful town in the autonomous region of Andalusia, in the South of Spain. It’s one of the best places to visit in Europe during autumn, as it’s still very warm and there are fewer people in the city. Granada doesn’t have an international airport, but it’s easily reachable from Malaga or Seville. From there you can do day trips to Granada or even better get the train to Granada and spend a few days in this charming city.
The most popular thing to do in Granada is to visit the famous Alhambra. This stunning Moorish palace complex gets completely overcrowded in summer and tickets are sold out months in advance. But in autumn, you might be able to book a ticket a week or two before your trip. But the sooner you can book the better, and walking through this historic palace is definitely the highlight of the trip so make sure not to miss it.
Granada has a lot more to offer than just the Alhambra though. For example, the cave houses, which are houses literally built in caves. The best way to see one of the cave houses from the inside is to see a traditional Flamenco show in a cave house. You can even spend the night in a cave house if you wanted a unique experience.
However, the cave houses are a bit outside the city centre. So, if you’re looking for accommodation in the city centre, the Apartamentos Placeta de San Gil is a top choice.
Eating out in Granada is still a very traditional Andalusian experience, and you usually get a free starter on the house. There are restaurants for each cuisine in Granada, and the best vegan restaurant is Hicuri. While in Granada, you should also make sure to visit a tea house, as there are many traditional Arabian tea houses in Granada due to its Moorish history.
Hallstatt, Austria
A popular pick for the best place to visit in Europe in autumn is the amazing lakeside town of Hallstatt Austria. Hallstatt is a storybook town that sits picturesquely between towering peaks of the Austrian Alps and a glistening swan-studded lake. The stunning beauty of the village of Hallstatt means that it is a ridiculously popular tourist destination and for that reason, autumn is a great time to visit! Summer crowds have dissipated and if you follow tried and true crowd-beating tips for visiting Hallstatt, you’ll be able to explore this gem sans crowds! Another benefit to visiting Hallstatt in autumn is that it is generally still warm enough to enjoy activities such as taking an electric boat out onto the lake, or walking the lake promenade.
Popular things to do in Hallstatt include exploring the adorable town itself, visiting the bone chapel, or one of the historic churches in town. Visitors can enjoy the history of Hallstatt by visiting the Roman ruins or the oldest salt mine in the world that overlooks the town.
The lakeshore is lined with restaurants serving tourist fare with stunning views!

Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon in the fall is a great place for anyone looking for warm weather, an affordable yet not crowded location. The weather is still warm enough to enjoy all of the outdoor activities but without the stagnant summer heat. Plus, Lisbon’s vibrant streets come alive with festivals and street parties during this time of year! Lisbon is also a very walkable city which makes the fall a perfect time to enjoy the warm yet cooler temperatures.
When it comes to sightseeing in the fall, Lisbon is full of options. Start off at one of its iconic attractions, such as the Castelo de São Jorge or Belém Tower, then make your way through Alfama, a charming old neighborhood with plenty of cafes and restaurants. My favorite is Altar, a non-touristy authentic Portuguese cuisine restaurant! Stroll through the ancient cobblestone streets and enjoy Lisbon’s iconic blue and white tiles. Finish off the day with a fresh glass of vinho verde.
Stay in the historic area of Chiado where you can easily access all of Lisbon’s sites. I’d recommend Portas do Ceu for its friendly service and great location.
Transport out of Lisbon to seaside towns Sintra or Cascais is easily accessible by train. A short journey to the Rossio Station can take you on a day trip to explore these enchanting towns, where you can marvel at its palaces and castles. Take a break from sightseeing with a traditional Portuguese pastry the pastel de nata.
Lisbon is a must-see destination in the fall for its ongoing warm temperatures, yet lower costs and crowds than the summer season.
London, England
London is one of the best and safest cities in the world, and fall (or Autumn as it is commonly called in the UK) is a perfect time to visit. London is best explored on foot, and Fall weather is far superior for London walking than Summer. On sunny days head to Hyde Park or Regent’s Park for a picnic. Wander along the South Bank of the River Thames opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. If you encounter Fall showers, duck in to one of the city’s many free museums such as the National Gallery or British Museum.
Early September brings the final performances from the world-renowned BBC Proms classical music festival in the spectacular Royal Albert Hall. If visiting in mid-October you can join in with London Cocktail Week with specially created cocktails at discounted prices in a variety of bars around the city.
For an unusual dining experience, book a table at Circus. Enjoy pan-Asian food and fantastic cocktails while watching circus performers on the central table. The acts vary but often include classic circus performances such as contortionists, fire-breathers and aerialists.
London is an expensive place to visit, but the Z Hotel Trafalgar is cheaper than some other hotels in similar central locations as the rooms are smaller. If you plan to be out making the most of London and only using your hotel for sleeping, then it would be a great choice to save money. Prague is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in Europe. If you ask me when is the best time to visit Prague as a tourist, I would say in the fall, during September and October. There are a few reasons to visit at this time of the year.
The first one is the weather. Prague in the fall has ideal weather for sightseeing. It is not as hot as during summer and not too cold either. The temperatures during the days are pleasant, enough to wear a T-shirt and a light jumper.
Daily sunshine will enhance the colorful leaves in the parks and forests. However, be ready with an umbrella as it may rain as well.
The second reason is no crowds as the peak summer season has ended and the Christmas time is still far away.
The third reason is lower prices. The prices of flight tickets, as well as the prices of accommodations, are cheaper than during the peak time.
There are so many things to do in Prague in the fall. One of them is visiting any of Prague’s parks. I would suggest going to Vysehrad where besides the amazing colorful park you can visit some historic parts of Vysehrad, like the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, the cemetery, the Rotunda of St. Martin, and more. In the end, you can enjoy a beer or coffee and something to eat in a tavern or cafe located there. All that with a beautiful view of Prague.
In the month of September, there is a celebration of St. Wenceslas who was the patron of Bohemia and brewers and winemakers. You can visit Wenceslas Fair, usually from the 14th to the 28th of September, on Wenceslas Square where you can taste wine and sweets, and you will see folklore, together with folk music.
If you love wine, you can go for St. Wenceslas Vintage in St. Wenceslas Vinyard. In this wine and music festival, you will be able to taste more than 50 types of wine, including the traditional Burčák. Some gastronomic delicacies will not be missing too.
During the whole fall, there is Autumn Strings Festival happening. Every year it is held in a different location and you will get the best of jazz and classical music there.
The best place to stay in Prague is in the city center where you can reach all the popular sights by walk. One example is Mosaic House Design Hotel. You will find many Czech and international restaurants all over the city of Prague. However, if you are keen to try Czech food and beer, you may pay a visit to restaurant U Pivrnce located in the Old Town.

I’ll be spending my autumn this year in Brussels so I was particularly keen on hearing your thoughts. Had not heard of the Sonian Forest before and a quick google search revealed it is close to my soon to be flat! Will of course report back. I can also recommend Vienna highly in autumn, the temps will still be mild and pleasant and the many vineyards provide a top-notch autumnal foliage.

Autumn is our favourite time of year and absolutely brilliant for travelling. This a a great post – loads of fantastic suggestions for places to visit. We have been to many of the cities and it was lovely recalling our trips there. But there are so many more places that we have yet to see! Bordeaux and Epernay particularly appeal, especially to enjoy the food and wine – and to see the grape harvest!

Being a Brit and here during the Autumn, the only thing I would add is to keep a water-proof jacket or mini umbrella ready as several places eg London and Edinburgh get lots of rain around that time. Interesting that you put The Cotswold area of England on the list, as this is where I live and never thought of it as an Autumn site.
Certainly southern Europe has good temperatures and weather too and I’ve often explored eg Cypurs and Malta in Autumn and its felt like a northern summer time.
Autumn can be a great time to explore European cities. I wish I got to travel more this time of year. I agree that Dublin 1 is central and the best place to stay. I have been to many of these cities but would love to visit Nice, Munich and Copenhagen the most! Thanks for the comprehensive list and I hope to tick more of these off in the next few years!
I absolutely agree that autumn is the best time to travel in Europe, especially in Portugal. I would just add to visit the Douro region, in the north of Portugal, in autumn because the landscapes are absolutely incredible.
I went to Granada in the spring and I loved it, I can imagine that in the autumn it is even more beautiful, with the golden colors of the foliage on the thousands of trees that are found throughout the city and on the hillsides.
So many beautiful places to choose from! Fall is such a pretty time of year, and with summers in Europe getting extra hot, it makes sense to travel in fall if possible. Sadly, as a teacher, it’s not easy for me. In a dream world, I’d probably choose one of the Spanish cities, Rome, or maybe Malta, places where fall is still warm but not too much 🙂
