If you’re thinking about embarking on a trip like this, you probably have a lot of questions about what to expect and how to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions about gorilla trekking in Uganda, so you can be more prepared than I was.
Gorilla trekking is a popular activity in Uganda, attracting tourists from all over the world to come face-to-face with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. However, many people have concerns about planning a gorilla trekking trip. So I wanted to put together all the questions I was asked in one place to hopefully inspire you to make the ‘trek’ to Uganda to see these gentle giants.

Gorilla trekking is a highly sought-after experience due to the opportunity it provides to observe rare and endangered animals in their natural habitat. The chance to witness these majestic creatures up close in the wild is a unique and unforgettable experience, making it a popular choice for wildlife enthusiasts. By up close, I mean about 30 feet away (closer if they move quicker than you). It’sw a completely different experience than a game drive where you’re in the vehicle most of the time.
Furthermore, gorilla trekking plays a significant role in wildlife conservation efforts. By supporting ecotourism, it provides a source of income for local communities, making it more profitable to protect gorilla habitats rather than exploit them for other purposes. Additionally, the presence of tourists can deter poachers and illegal activities that threaten the gorilla population.
However, due to the fragile nature of the gorilla population and the impact of human presence, permits for gorilla trekking are limited and strictly regulated. These measures are put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and the trekkers, as well as to minimize the disturbance to their natural habitat.
3. What Country Has The Most Gorillas?
The countries with the highest populations of gorillas are Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda is estimated to have around 400 mountain gorillas, Uganda is home to approximately 400 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is believed to have about 800 mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
These countries are home to the most gorillas in the world due to several factors. First, these countries have vast expanses of dense forests, which provide a suitable habitat for gorillas to thrive. Additionally, the governments and conservation organizations in these countries have implemented strict measures to protect and conserve gorilla populations, such as creating national parks and implementing anti-poaching efforts. 4: Is gorilla trekking Safe?
Gorilla trekking is generally considered safe, but it is important to be aware of potential risks and take necessary precautions. Visitors are advised to follow safety measures provided by professional guides and park rangers to minimize any potential dangers. Some potential risks during gorilla trekking include encountering wild animals, steep and uneven terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions.
To minimize these risks, visitors should always listen to and follow the instructions of their professional guides and park rangers. There is a briefing session held before every trek.
It is also important to maintain a safe distance from the gorillas and to avoid making sudden movements or loud noises that could startle them. Professional guides and park rangers are responsible for ensuring the safety of visitors during the trek, and they are trained to handle any unexpected situations that may arise.
When a silverback was behaving unpredictably (at least to me) our guide got in front of the group and was able to diffuse the situation. That was the only time I ever felt even a little unsafe.
5. Where is it possible to visit Gorillas?
In East Africa, the best places to visit Mountain Gorillas are in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, which are typically from June to July and December to February.
In Uganda, the best places to see Mountain Gorillas are in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the prime location for gorilla trekking. In Congo, Virunga National Park is the main spot for gorilla tourism. However, we went to Kahuzi-Biega National Park due to safety concerns, and it was a different breed of mountain gorillas.
Mountain Gorilla groups have been habituated for tourism in all three countries, providing visitors with the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The availability of permits for gorilla trekking varies, and it is essential to book in advance.
6. What is the best time to trek gorillas?
The best time to trek gorillas in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which occur from December to February and June to July. During these months, the trekking conditions are optimal due to less slippery and muddy ground. The dry seasons provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors seeking to observe gorillas in their natural habitat. Visitors can expect clearer views and easier navigation through the lush forests, enhancing the overall experience of seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. 7. How long does a gorilla trek in Uganda take?
A gorilla trek in Uganda typically takes around 2 to 8 hours, depending on various factors. The duration can be affected by the location and movements of the gorillas, as they can be quite elusive and may require some time to be located. The start time of the trek also plays a role, as early morning treks may lead to quicker sightings due to gorillas being more active during this time. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are usually allowed to spend up to 1 hour with them.
The unpredictability of gorilla trekking is also a factor in the duration of the trek. Hiking speed, the density of vegetation in the habitat, and the challenging terrain can contribute to the time it takes to locate the gorillas. Additionally, weather conditions can also affect the trek, as heavy rainfall can make the paths more difficult to navigate.
If you have physical limitations (3 out of 5 of us in the group had knee surgeries, one was dealing with altitude sickness, and two had inhalers), be sure to let your guide know ahead of time. We were able to get into the group going to the closest gorilla family by doing this. This isn’t a guarantee as there were a lot of people the day we went, but it never hurts to try.

9. How do I get a gorilla permit for Uganda?

10. How much is a permit to see gorillas in Uganda?
In Uganda, the prices for gorilla permits vary for locals, foreign residents, and foreign visitors. For locals, the cost of a gorilla permit is 250,000 UGX. Foreign residents have to pay 600,000 UGX, while foreign visitors are charged 700 USD.

11. When should I book a gorilla permit?

It is recommended to book a gorilla permit as far in advance as possible, ideally 6-12 months ahead of the planned trekking date. Gorilla permits are highly competitive, especially during the high season months of June, July, August, and December. It is essential to book well in advance to secure a spot, as permits can sell out quickly, particularly for popular dates. Without a permit, individuals may miss out on the opportunity to see the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. If you go in January, like us, it isn’t the high season, but you should still book the permit in advance.
12. What is included in a gorilla permit?
A gorilla permit typically includes the opportunity to trek and observe Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. Age limits for gorilla trekking usually range from 15 to 18 years old, with some locations having a minimum age requirement.
Tour operators often assist in obtaining the gorilla permit, arranging transportation to the trekking location, providing experienced guides, and ensuring the safety and comfort of the participants. Additionally, the permit can also cover the cost of park entrance fees, which contribute to the conservation and protection of the gorillas and their habitats.

13. What are the chances of seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda?

They monitor and protect the gorillas, as well as guide visitors through the dense forests to locate the gorilla families. Their knowledge and efforts are essential for the safety and conservation of the gorillas, as well as providing an opportunity for tourists to see them in their natural habitat.
14. How Difficult is gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Gorilla trekking in Uganda presents a physical challenge due to the rugged terrain, unpredictable weather conditions, and the need for a good level of physical fitness. The trekking paths can be steep, slippery, and uneven, requiring participants to have good balance and endurance. The weather can change rapidly, with rain and mud adding to the difficulty of the trek.
However, older individuals or those with physical disabilities can still participate in gorilla trekking by hiring porters to assist with carrying equipment and providing support along the way. I hired a porter to help me and was REALLY grateful for him. He helped me find my footing, carried my bag with my camera, snacks, and water, and was just a pleasant guy to be around. I also brought my hiking poles to help me with balance.
Potential difficulties during gorilla trekking include navigating through dense vegetation, slippery trails, and the need for agility and stamina. I do recommend working out prior to the trip with hiking.
It’s also important to realize that you’ll be hiking at altitude. This means you have to be careful about altitude sickness. This can happen to anyone at any fitness level. It’s not something that people often think about when they think of an African safari, so just be prepared if you’re coming from sea level like us.
15. How many gorilla groups are available for trekking in Uganda?
There are 15 families of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Volcanoes National Park in Uganda. These families of gorillas are typically led by a dominant silverback male, who is the leader and protector of the group. The family structure of gorillas also includes several adult females, their offspring, and sometimes younger or subordinate males.
Each group is habituated to human presence to varying degrees, allowing tourists and researchers to observe them in their natural habitat. These trekking experiences provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about and appreciate the social dynamics and behaviors of these incredible primates while also supporting conservation efforts.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique opportunity to join researchers and park rangers in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda to train mountain gorillas. Unlike gorilla trekking, which involves observing habituated gorilla families from a distance, the habituation experience allows participants to spend more time with a designated gorilla family and observe their behavior up close.
The habituation experience typically lasts for four hours, compared to the one-hour visit during gorilla trekking. This extended duration allows for a higher level of interaction with the gorillas and a deeper understanding of their social structure and behaviors.
To join the Gorilla Habituation Experience, participants must first register through a licensed tour operator and obtain the necessary permits. On the day of the experience, participants will meet with the park rangers and researchers, who will provide a briefing and lead the group into the forest to locate the designated gorilla family.
Once the gorilla family is located, participants will spend several hours observing and learning about their behavior, movements, and interactions with each other. This experience is not only a thrilling adventure but also provides valuable support for gorilla conservation efforts in Uganda.
16. How many people are allowed to trek to a gorilla family?
The maximum number of people allowed to trek a habituated gorilla family per day is typically limited to 8 visitors. This limitation is in place to minimize the impact of human interference on the gorillas and their habitat. Gorillas are highly sensitive to human diseases, and excessive exposure to humans can increase their risk of contracting illnesses.
Additionally, large groups of visitors can disrupt the natural behavior of the gorillas, causing stress and potentially leading to habitat damage. Once you encounter the gorilla family, you will have approximately one hour to observe and take photos from a safe distance.
It is important to be prepared for varying weather conditions during your Uganda gorilla trek, as the climate in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be unpredictable. Ranger guides and porters play a crucial role in guiding and assisting you during the trek, providing important information and helping you navigate through the challenging terrain.
Essential items to bring on a Uganda gorilla trek include sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, insect repellent, water, snacks, and a camera. The weather in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is generally cool with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 20°C, and the park experiences two rainy seasons from March to May and from September to November. Being prepared for these conditions will ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable gorilla trekking experience.
20. What are the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking?
When gorilla trekking, it is essential to follow certain dos and don’ts to ensure the safety and well-being of the mountain gorillas. Do maintain a 7-meter distance from the gorillas at all times to minimize disturbance and reduce the risk of transmitting human diseases. Do follow the guidelines and instructions provided by the park rangers to avoid close contact with the gorillas. Do move quietly and slowly to prevent scaring the animals and disrupting their natural behavior. Do wear your mask when you’re near the gorillas.
Don’t attempt to touch the gorillas or make any sudden movements towards them. Don’t use flash photography as it can startle the gorillas and disrupt their environment. Additionally, avoid eating or drinking in the presence of the gorillas to prevent any food or beverage transmission.
It is crucial to prevent the spread of human diseases to mountain gorillas, as they are susceptible to illnesses that humans carry but have not developed immunity to.
21. What exactly happens when we find the gorillas?
When you find gorillas during a gorilla trekking tour in Uganda, Rwanda, or Congo, it is important to follow the instructions of your guide. The guides know the gorillas and the terrain. They’ll give instructions at the briefing before you depart.
Upon encountering the gorillas, it is crucial to maintain a calm and quiet demeanor, avoiding sudden movements and loud noises. As you spend an hour with the gorillas, you should observe their behavior from a distance, refraining from touching or feeding them. Adhering to these guidelines not only ensures your safety but also minimizes disturbance to the gorillas and their natural habitat.
Our guides in both the Congo and Uganda told us about the family, matched the mom to the baby (if the baby wasn’t hanging on to the mom). They cleared out some of the trees and vines so we could get good pictures. Guides often walked around to clear a path so we could see them from different angles and spread the group more.
The gorillas are wild animals that are habituated to humans, which means they are unpredictable. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. During our first trek in the Congo, one stick fell from the tree and startled the silverback. It got frustrated and did a small charge to the group. The guide made sure we all backed up to give him space.
Another group (our Uganda trek), had young gorillas that felt very comfortable around us and were putting on a playful show.
Other than watching in awe for an hour, what you can expect with gorillas is pretty much unpredictable.
22. How much time can one spend with Mountain gorillas?
Visitors to see Mountain gorillas are allowed a maximum of one hour to spend with the gorillas, to minimize the risk of disease transmission and to ensure the well-being of the animals. Activities permitted during this time include viewing the gorillas, taking photos, and observing their natural behavior from a distance of at least 7 meters, to minimize disturbance.
The guides will tell you when you have 10 minutes and 5 minutes left. If there is a specific picture you want to get or move to a different location, just as your guide if it’s possible to do so.
23. Are the Mountain Gorillas dangerous?
Gorillas are generally known for their calm and gentle behavior towards humans. They are social animals and their interactions with humans can range from indifferent to curious. In some cases, gorillas have been observed displaying playful behavior towards regular human visitors, such as mock-charging and other non-aggressive gestures. It is important to note, however, that while gorillas may appear friendly, they are still wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect.
When approaching or interacting with gorillas in their natural habitat, it is important to follow safety precautions to ensure both the safety of the humans and the gorillas. Guidelines often include keeping a safe distance, avoiding direct eye contact, and refraining from making sudden movements or loud noises that may startle the animals. 24. How close can I get to the Gorillas?

The required distance to keep from the gorillas is a minimum of 7 meters (about 23 feet) to minimize the risk of transmitting diseases to them.
When encountering mountain gorillas, it is essential to exhibit necessary precautions and behaviors. This includes maintaining a quiet voice, refraining from making direct eye contact, and avoiding sudden movements to avoid startling the gorillas.
The approach to the gorillas involves several steps. Visitors must keep their voices low to minimize any disturbance to the animals. They then follow the gorilla’s trail, guided by experienced trackers, until they locate the group. Once in the presence of the gorillas, visitors must maintain the required distance and adhere to the guidelines for the duration of the visit.
25. Do I have to Wear a Mask near the Goillas?
Yes, when in the natural habitat of gorillas, it is required to wear a mask when near them. This is to reduce the risk of transmitting human-borne illnesses to the gorillas, as they are susceptible to many of the same diseases as humans. Masks should cover the nose and mouth and be worn at all times when within a certain distance of the gorillas to ensure their safety and well-being.
26. Can You Touch The Gorillas?
When interacting with gorillas in their natural habitat, it is important to adhere to strict rules and restrictions to ensure the safety and well-being of both the gorillas and the visitors. The recommended distance to keep from gorillas is at least 7 meters (about 23 feet) to minimize any potential risks and to respect their space. Touching a gorilla should only occur under specific circumstances and with the supervision and approval of trained guides or researchers for the benefit of the gorillas, such as during a health check or rescue operation.
Visitors need to understand the safety and health reasons for not touching gorillas, as this can introduce potential risks such as the transmission of diseases or alteration of their natural behavior. Additionally, gorillas may approach visitors on their own, and it is important to remain calm and let them take the lead to ensure a safe interaction.
27. Should I book a porter on a gorilla trek?
Absolutely. My porter, Eric, was invaluable. He held my (sweaty) hand through most of it. Told me where to step. Tried to get me to avoid the elephant poop (he failed, but that’s my own clumsiness, not on him). He made sure I drank water and took breaks. He also carried my bag with my camera, water, and snacks. I fall a lot so I was happy to not have to worry about my camera getting wet or damaged and I could just focus on the terrain.
Hiring a porter for a gorilla trekking trip offers multiple benefits. Firstly, porters provide essential support during the strenuous hike through the dense jungle, carrying extra gear and providing assistance when needed. Additionally, hiring a porter directly benefits the local community, as it provides employment and income for individuals living near the gorilla habitats. 28. Is Gorilla Trekking Ethical?

However, proponents argue that responsible tourism practices and regulated visitor numbers can minimize these impacts. So overall, yes, gorilla trekking is considered an ethical animal encounter
29. What are the current threats to Africa’s mountain gorillas?
The current threats to Africa’s mountain gorillas include habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion, poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, human-wildlife conflict resulting from competition for resources, and disease outbreaks such as the recent Ebola epidemic. 30. What should I pack for a gorilla trekking trip?
For a gorilla trekking trip, essential items to pack include long trousers, lightweight and breathable shirts, waterproof hiking boots, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the incredible experience.
