Best Local Tour Companies Around the World

When planning your next adventure, have you ever considered the benefits of using a local tour company? While much of the travel scene is currently all about planning your own trip and never using an organizer, travel should be embraced in all of its forms. Local tour operators can transform your travel experience, offering a unique blend of insider knowledge, personalized service, and authentic encounters that larger, international companies often miss. If you follow my guide on how to choose the right tour company, you’ll find that these are some of the best local tour companies, recommended by travelers who have used them.

Don’t let people shame you into not using a tour company. I’ve used tour companies in Colombia, Uganda, Finland, and more. They’re meant to enhance your research. By choosing a local tour company, you’re not just booking a tour; you’re immersing yourself in the culture, supporting the local economy, and discovering hidden gems that only the locals know about. Katerre Expedições, Brazil

Visiting the Amazon Rainforest had long been a dream of mine. Through friends, we discovered Katerre Expedições, a Brazilian travel operator specializing in socio-ecological itineraries in the heart of the Amazon. Though we opted for a day tour, Katerre offers a variety of multi-day adventures that I highly recommend!

Our experience was more than a wilderness adventure; it was an immersion in the vibrant cultures of the rainforest’s indigenous communities. Imagine playing football with locals or learning to extract rubber from a tree. We navigated rivers by boat, explored isolated communities, and enjoyed deserted beaches all to ourselves.

Katerre practices low-impact tourism, aiming to protect the fragile ecosystem with small groups, eco-friendly boats, and careful waste management. The local guides enriched our journey with Amazonian legends and daily-life stories that were both unique and fascinating.

Highlights included swimming with “botos” (Amazon River dolphins), experiencing a downpour on the Rio Negro with no one else in sight, and walking through the jungle among centuries-old trees. The abundance of birdlife was truly spectacular.

It was the trip of a lifetime. You can reach Katerre through their website or on Instagram @expedicaokaterre.

The Colombian Trip, Colombia

When planning our trip to Colombia, I knew I wanted to see a lot of it in a short time. I simply couldn’t choose what to cut out of the itinerary. During my research, I found The Colombian Trip. They’re a local company that helped me to create the itinerary I wanted in the time frame.

Three cities in ten days was quite an undertaking. We flew into Bogota, then to Medellin, and then to Cartagena. The Colombian Trip took care of us from when we landed in Bogota until we took off ten days later. In each city, a local guide and driver greeted us at the airport. These guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and lived in the cities we were visiting.

While some people warned us about visiting Colombia because of its complicated history, we felt incredibly safe with The Colombian Trip. From exploring the cities, to challenging ourselves to climb the Rock in El Penol & Guatape, the guides brought magic to an already wonderful experience.

The planning process was simple via Whatsapp and email. I recommend The Colombian Trip to anyone visiting Colombia.

Wiwa Tours, Colombia

Wiwa Tours is a fantastic local tour company based in Santa Marta, Colombia, that offers 3-day, 4-day, and 5-day trekking excursions to the Lost City archeological site in Tayrona National Park.

We did extensive research on various tour companies before finally making our choice. Wiwa is the only local tour company that actually uses indigenous guides. In other words, our guide, Pedro, was a member of the local Kogi tribe and lived in a village near our trekking route.

While other companies, such as Magic Tour Colombia and Expotur, will provide interesting information about the route and the archeological site, Pedro was able to offer us a unique insight into his tribe’s cultural practices. He spent an evening telling us all about the Kogi belief systems and coming-of-age traditions. We even got to meet the mamo (spiritual leader) during our Lost City trek.

Some of the other highlights of the trip included the chance to swim in the river along the route and the incredible local dishes we got to try. Wiwa, along with most of the other tour companies, partners with chefs at the campsites to serve incredible local dishes.  We got to try whole-fried fish, patacones, fresh fruit juices, and more.

Wiwa did a fantastic job and we would highly recommend them to anybody. Their website (wiwatour.com) is easy to navigate, and they were quick to respond to our questions.

&Adventure, Croatia

If you’re looking for an epic adventure visiting Croatia, look no further than taking a tour with &Adventure. From adventure tours like cycling or sea kayaking in Croatia, to multi-day sailing trips on the Adriatic Sea, And Adventure has the perfect tour for you.

With a limited amount of time in Croatia, we were unable to fit a multi-day trip with &Adventure into our itinerary. Instead, we joined the team on a day kayaking the Adriatic Sea, and with how amazing the day was, we were left only dreaming of how incredible a multi-day trip with them would be!

From contact before booking, to exact directions for where to meet up, and our guide, Kristian and experience of the tour itself, the &Adventure team was a dream.

When looking for a tour in Croatia, we knew we wanted something local and sustainable, that promoted being active, and definitely something on the sea. After reviewing the And Adventure website, we knew their company and sea kayaking tour was the perfect fit! With over 15 years of experience and over 100 different activities to choose from, paired with guides that truly love what they do — a tour with And Adventure levels up any Croatian itinerary.

You can find And Adventure on Facebook under And Adventure and online at AndAdventure.com. From day tours to multi week tours and even customizable trips pairing culture and cuisine, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for with And Adventure!

Cuba Cultural Tours, Cuba

I love small group tours that focus on cultural immersion. My kind of travel experience is taking cooking lessons with local chefs, chatting with local artists in their workshops, and taking a walking architecture tour with a historian.  I prefer to stay in guesthouses or an AirBnB where I can talk with the hosts and chat about their lives over coffee.

I found all of this and more through a small group tour to Cuba offered by Travels with Talek. Cuba can be a more challenging destination than a European country, for example. It’s best to visit with a local company that can easily navigate the country’s peculiarities. This is especially true for U.S. citizens, like me, who must travel to Cuba under different guidelines than other nationalities.

The Cuba Cultural Tour I took with my sister exposed us to Cuba’s fascinating culture. We swam and snorkeled in some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. We hiked in the Cuban countryside, chatted with farmers, enjoyed vibrant music and performances at every turn and visited four different cities.

The best part is that we really felt like we got to know the Cuban people who welcomed us with smiles and gracious hospitality.

India for Beginners, India

India can be a challenging travel destination, and feeling supported by local experts can really help. When I was traveling in north India on a Women-Only Holi Tour with  India for Beginners custom tours, I really felt the truth of this. I was with 5 women, all from the United States, and none had been to India before. We toured the famous Golden Triangle – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur – and celebrated Holi at a private party in Jaipur.

While this is a well-worn tourist circuit, we were treated to some unique local experiences that turned out to be the highlight of the trip for most of the participants. We started the trip at a homestay in upscale South Delhi. It was a soft landing for the newcomers to India; they were  greeted by a friendly family in a safe and cosy home atmosphere.

In Jaipur, we were the guests of a noble family in their heritage property in the Pink City. They gave us a cooking demonstration and then served us a delicious dinner in their open-air courtyard. Afterwards, they brought out an antique box and gave us ornate glass bangles as a souvenir. One woman on the tour was moved to tears by this experience.

Other highlights included a rambunctious private party at a luxury homestay. The party was both exuberant and safe, and we had a blast. Having an ethical interaction with two rescued elephants at a wilderness camp was also a favourite moment for many. And then seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise with a local female guide was the perfect end to the trip.

Open Sky Circles, India

For those looking to support local and small businesses, Open Sky Circles, based in Bangalore, India, is a great local tour company specializing in multi-day tours. They offer luxurious adventure retreats, where small groups are taken on journeys to domestically and internationally off-beat locations.

Open Sky Circles creates unique and intimate experiences, ensuring personalized attention and an immersive adventure. The company is led by two female hosts who are avid solo travelers with extensive experience, having visited over 85 countries combined. They are both adventurous travelers who love hiking and are certified scuba divers. Their dedication to adventure and mindfulness is evident in every aspect of the retreats, with personally curated and hand-picked activities included in the itinerary.

These adventure retreats are held in less-traveled domestic and international locations such as Dandeli in India and the east coast of Sri Lanka, offering a refreshing alternative to common tourist spots. The itinerary includes a combination of adventurous activities like hiking, scuba diving, and snorkeling, along with mindfulness exercises such as creative sessions, book readings, and personal growth workshops. Highlights often include guided yoga sessions at sunrise or sunset, providing a perfect blend of physical activity and mental relaxation.

Indie Travel, Komodo Island, Indonesia

As an Indonesian myself, I know that taking a 3 day boat tour is the best way to visit Komodo. Komodo National Park consists of 3 big islands but with many small islands, which makes it difficult to explore it yourself.

I got a few recommendations from my friends, and decided to go with Indie Travel. Mostly because they guaranteed that the boat would sail. Some other tour company required a minimum of 10 passengers to sail, and I didn’t want to handle the uncertainty. Also, Indie Travel charges us a very reasonable price – I saw another company charge 3x the amount for the exact same tour.

Both my husband and I highly enjoyed our trip. There was a great selection of delicious food on board and nice places on the boat to hang out with others. We made friends with others on the board whom we are still in contact with. Above all, snorkelling in crystal clear water in Komodo, meeting the Komodo dragons and swim with manta rays were absolutely incredible experience. It was so good that my husband thought that taking the Komodo boat tour was the highlight of our honeymoon!

Blue Flame Tours, Java, Indonesia

On my third trip to Bali, Indonesia, I wanted to do something different and leave the island for a few days. Since Java island neighbors Bali, it was the perfect opportunity to explore eastern Java.

My husband and I didn’t want to worry about transportation, such as riding a motorbike. So we sought a local tour company to coordinate the trip and could accommodate a private tour for us.

We booked Blue Flame Tour for 4 days/3 nights. It was easy to communicate with the team via email and WhatsApp. The pricing was very reasonable and included – a driver, a tour guide, attraction entrance fees, a gas mask for Ijen Crater, accommodations, meals, water, and a ferry ride from Bali’s Gilimanuk Harbour.

The team from Blue Flame Tour made the trip memorable. We hiked Mount Ijen at 2:00am to see the Blue Flames and sunrise, rode a Jeep through volcanic ash, saw Mount Bromo at sunrise, and adventured through the rushing waters of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.

The service was excellent and they took extra care of us, especially when I needed help hiking down the wobbly rocks at Ijen and walking through the waterfall cascades.

The best way to contact Blue Flame Tour is by visiting the website or via WhatsApp (+6285235991411 for Johanes).

Tangkoko Safety Stop, Tangkoko, Indonesia

Tangkoko National Park in North Sulawesi is a large jungle area close to Manado, filled with amazing wildlife. It’s famous for four main animals: black macaques, tarsiers, cuscus bears, and hornbills. The best part? With an experienced guide, you’re almost guaranteed to see these animals.

We had an unforgettable time on our tour with Tangkoko Safety Stop, a local company run by a mother-and-daughter team, Renny and Lea. They provide multiple-day trips with everything you need: Tangkoko National Park excursions, authentic accommodations, delicious food at their Beach Warung, and diving excursions to Lembeh, a world-class diving destination, for some variety from the jungle.

Exploring the national park over multiple days increases your chances of encountering wildlife, as animal sightings can be unpredictable. This is especially recommended for bird watchers and photographers, as the park is home to many endemic birds.

Their tours accommodate small groups of 2 to 4 people, with visits to the national park twice a day: one longer in the morning and a shorter one in the evening. A waterfall, tarantulas, and snakes can also be part of the jungle program. Besides visiting Tangkoko National Park, you can also explore more areas of North Sulawesi, such as nearby mangroves and Tomohon, to spot even more wildlife species.

Renny is a top-rated guide with extensive knowledge and a deep love for animals. We can’t recommend her enough. She respects nature and wildlife by not feeding them or shining torches at them. It was incredible how much effort Renny put into helping us spot the animals, and each time she was so excited and grateful for the animals to show up.

You can contact Renny and Lea from Tangkoko Safety Stop via WhatsApp (+62 822-9222-2119) or Instagram (@rennytangkoko).

Jailoo Tourism, Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of our favourite countries to travel to. It’s also home to one of our favourite local tour operators, Jailoo Tourism

Jailoo Tourism is a community-based tourism operator in the Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan. They offer a range of tours and trips within the region but are most well-known for their horse treks to Song Kul Lake – which is exactly what we did. Here’s why we chose them.

Firstly, their prices are extremely fair. Secondly, the woman who runs it is amazing. She knows everything about the region and can advise you on every option under the sun, so you can tailor a trip to your liking. Third, they choose good quality, more authentic yurt camps to stay at, rather than super touristic ones. And finally, they give you a price breakdown of all the costs and you can pick and choose what you want (i.e., you can take out meals, or choose to camp if you have your own gear). We chose to not pay for lunches and packed our own instead.

We went on a 3-day / 2-night horse trek to Song Kul Lake and loved it. Song Kul is a high-altitude lake fringed by nomadic yurt camps. Of the 3 days, we particularly enjoyed the second day, riding around the lake and then spending the afternoon with the family at camp. We got to watch a horse being milked and play games in the yurt with the children. Overall, it was a really exceptional and authentic experience and one of the highlights of our 2 months in Kyrgyzstan.

It’s best to get in contact Jailoo via WhatsApp at +996 707 33-65-2.

TourLeb, Lebanon

If Lebanon is on your bucket list, you could not do better than to book a tour with Tourleb. As a very experienced traveler, I can tell you that Lebanon is not an easy country to travel in. The two women who run the company, Nada and Joelle, make it easy. They have boundless enthusiasm and detailed knowledge of Lebanon and they create bespoke tours based on your specific interests. Everything is included in the package they put together for you, so you avoid the stress and pitfalls of travel in this rather chaotic country.

For full disclosure, Tourleb sponsored us on a week-long tour, but honestly, it was a great tour. My husband and I wanted to see historical sites, particularly UNESCO sites, and Tourleb more than delivered. Not only did we see all the UNESCO sites in the country – Baalbek was the absolute highlight – but they added some decidedly not tourist-oriented but equally fascinating historical, cultural and religious locations.

We also loved their conscious approach to tourism. They support local businesses, not chains, and pay them fairly. And, if available, they’ll choose women-owned and women-run enterprises. This meant hotels that were much less cookie-cutter than many tour operators would choose, and wonderful meals in small restaurants we never would have found on our own. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this company offers a truly extraordinary experience.

Baja Outdoor Activities, Mexico

Baja California, an 800-mile-long peninsula of Mexico, is a nature lover’s and sea kayaker’s dream. The best way to explore Baja’s turquoise waters and white sand beaches is to go with a local outfitter. Baja Outdoor Activities (BOA) is a local tour company offering sea kayaking, standup paddleboarding, fly fishing, and whale watching trips on both coast of Baja. Trip lengths range from ½ day tours to 10 day expeditions.

With more than 30 years of running safe trips, BOA is one of the most respected local outdoor companies in Baja. The bilingual guides have wonderful personalities, current certifications in outdoor skills and first aid, years of experience, and astute local knowledge of the area.

Participants can enjoy such trips as yoga and sea kayaking, whale watching from a motor skiff, and circumnavigating Espirtu Santo with a chance to swim with sea lions. I choose the classic 10-day sea kayaking expedition from Loreto to La Paz. After years of sea kayaking around the world, I wanted to go with the most acclaimed sea kayaking company on this challenging trip. The 100-mile sea kayaking trip is the centerpiece of BOA’s offerings. The trip was a stunning experience of paddling crystal clear waters teeming with marine life, and then camping on deserted beaches at night.

Camel Trip, Morocco

We spent an amazing month road-tripping through Morocco and visiting the Erg Chebbi dunes was one of the best things we did there. We had our tour into the sand dunes arranged by a local Berber cooperative called Camel Trip Morocco.  We contacted quite a few tour companies as we wanted to see what was on offer.  We decided to go with Camel Trip Morocco because right from the beginning our host Hammadi was fantastic.  He really wanted to make sure that we had the best time and it was easy to arrange as he did it through WhatsApp.  He responded really quickly and helped us to adapt the tour to include quad biking and so ended up booking 2 nights in the desert because there was just so much we could do.  We also loved that it was run as a cooperative where everyone involved from Hammadi to the camel guide to the waiter were all from the same Berber community.

I’ve never been on a tour that was so much fun, whilst also had a great focus on the local people – we visited local villages as part of our experience.  Some of the highlights were camel riding into the desert at sunset. Sandboarding between the dunes (and then later quad biking and riding a 4×4 in them too). The fantastic luxury desert camp, that was 100% luxury yet an affordable price, and the people – everyone we met on the tour that hosted us was welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make sure we had a great time.  One of the more unusual highlights for me as a mum, was that at meal times one of the waiters would sing and chat to our 4-month-old so that I could eat my meal before it got cold!

Nepal Adventure Point in Kathmandu, Nepal

Discover the heart of the Himalayas with Nepal Adventure Point, a Kathmandu-based enterprise that is not just a business, but a family legacy. This eco-conscious venture is the brainchild of a local family, deeply rooted in their love for their homeland and its breathtaking landscapes. The company prides itself on its team of local guides, whose unparalleled expertise and intimate knowledge of the region ensure an unforgettable experience.

Even if you’re not an avid hiker or in peak physical condition, the friendly and reassuring team at Nepal Adventure Point can make your adventure a reality. I personally recommend the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek, a leisurely journey through the villages nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. It’s a unique opportunity to witness traditional village life first-hand. The six-day circular route follows well-worn paths at lower altitudes, so you needn’t worry about altitude sickness. After a day’s trek through the countryside, it was nice to unwind with a home-cooked meal at a simple lodge and to listen to Padam (our guide) talking about past adventures and ancestral legends.

At the helm of this family-run business is BB Bhandari, a visionary in his own right. Despite hailing from a country steeped in tradition, Bhandari is a forward-thinker, embracing change and progress with open arms. His progressive mindset is evident in his support for his daughter, Sazeena, who harbours ambitions of leading the company in the future.

Currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Copenhagen, Sazeena is being groomed to take over the reins of Nepal Adventure Point. Her father’s unwavering support is a testament to his belief in her capabilities and his commitment to empowering the next generation.

Nepal Adventure Point is more than just a tour company – it’s a testament to a family’s love for their country, their commitment to sustainable tourism, and their dedication to sharing the wonders of Nepal with the world.

Inka’s Destination, Peru

If you’re looking for an incredible experience in Peru from a local company, then you’ll love Inka’s Destination. They are a Peruvian-owned and operated tour company based in Cusco that provides a ton of unique experiences, from historical exploration to thrilling adventures. Their trips range from half-day excursions to five-day hiking adventures.

When I went to Peru, we chose to use Inka’s Destination as our tour provider for the Inca Jungle Trail. To this day, it is one of my favorite travel experiences (which is saying a lot since I’ve been to over 35 countries). One of my favorite things about them was the local touch they brought to the four day trek and unique experiences I never would have known about. We had dinner on a farm with all the ingredients from the farm. We river rafted, ziplined, hiked, mountain biked, and relaxed in hot springs, all before ending up at Machu Picchu on our fourth day.

The guides were knowledgeable and kind, making it an experience I’ll truly never forget! You could tell they were passionate about what they were doing and excited to share more about the beauty of Peru with us. Whether you want an epic adventure or a relaxed tour, they have you covered while in Peru!

Abha Trips, Saudi Arabia

One of our favorite local tour companies has to be Abha Trips, which operates in the remote Asir region of southern Saudi Arabia. Founded by Osama Al Qahtani, an Asiri local, and run by his team of local tour guides, Abha Trips aims to showcase the beauty of this secluded region to visitors from around the world.

We recently used Abha Trips to visit Rijal Almaa, a tiny village known for its unique gingerbread architecture and fortress-like mansions. The architecture has earned Rijal Almaa a place on UNESCO’s tentative list of world heritage sites and the moniker “Saudi Arabia’s Gingerbread Village”.

Rijal Almaa can only be accessed via a winding mountainous road. Mohammed, our tour guide from Abha Trips, was not only an expert in local history and architecture but also an excellent driver who helped us traverse the difficult terrain.

Abha Trips offers several trips in and around Abha, the capital of the Asir region, including private tours, camping trips, and multi-day trips to lesser-known places in Saudi Arabia. They also offer workshops for Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, an ancient art form practiced by the women of the region.

The best way to contact the Abha Trips team is through their website. You can also Whatsapp them at the phone number mentioned on the website or email them. The team is very responsive.

Africa Adventure Vacations, Uganda

Gorilla trekking in the jungles of Africa means entrusting your trip to a company that has local knowledge and guidance. I did a ton of research into companies that provide both safaris and trekking in this area. A personal recommendation brought me to the website of Africa Adventure Vacations.

Based in Uganda, I loved that my money for tourism would go to a company that is based there. In addition, when a trip is booked through them, they donate to help orphans get an education.

I worked with them to create a custom itinerary, visiting Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda. We did a wonderful mixture of trekking to monkeys, safaris, and cultural experiences. There was a total of five of us with our guide Hamza. Hamza lives in Uganda and was able to teach us all about local customs as well as making sure I didn’t take home any baby gorillas or lions.

Hamza went to school for tourism, so he knew about the animals (of course), but he also knew people at most lodges and even other drivers in the parks! Talk about insider knowledge. His knowledge and organization made it a trip that I’ll never forget. You can join us on a small group tour with Africa Adventure Vacations in 2026 – just click here for more info!
