I don’t know about you but one of the first things I look up when traveling somewhere is where to eat! Where’s the best food – the best seafood – the best cocktail – I don’t care – I just want to know what food or drink makes this place special. Ideally – the places to eat include local flavor and aren’t just tourist spots (though, places become tourist spots because they’re good). Our long weekend getaway to Chincoteague, Virginia wasn’t any different. These are all my taste-tested recommendations for the best places to eat in Chincoteague!

Breakfast in Chincoteague
Sandy Pony Donuts
We don’t typically go out for breakfast since that typically requires real clothes and being somewhat caffeinated – but it was worth it to go here! Hands down best donuts I’ve had in a really really long time (possibly ever). The Sandy Pony Donut truck is where the magic happens and that delicious ball of dough is freshly fried for your order. Meaning by the time you bite into the donut, it’s still warm. Part of me regrets not having this on our first day so I could try more donuts during our visit, but the other part of me knows that I probably would have gone every day!
Lunch in Chincoteague
Pico’s Taqueria
Is there a more perfect food than tacos? I don’t think so. I wasn’t about to pass up a family restaurant with a motto “you can put anything on a taco” They didn’t disappoint! The menu is regularly changing, but since we weren’t there for long, I decided to try the Chincoteague Classic. Your choice of chicken, beef, pork, or fish with lettuce, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, and creme fraiche. It was delicious! But the meal didn’t stop there – not only do they have great tacos but dessert nachos! This has to be THE best lunch place to eat in Chincoteague.
Smokey’s Barbecue
Slow cooked pulled pork always seems to call to me no matter where I am. Add in a fun atmosphere with colorful chairs, corn hole, and tiki umbrellas and I’m in. I don’t know how to feel about Smokey’s which is unusual for me. The pulled pork and brisket were delicious – however, it took a LONG time to get our food. There were a lot of people who waited longer than us and even just the drinks took a while for some – though the lemonade is refreshing. Just be aware before your visit! There is another BBQ food truck – Woody’s – that we did not have enough time to visit.
Famous Pizza
Pizza – the food that unifies the world. Anything you can imagine can be put on pizza – from breakfast foods to desserts – even pineapple! As I love crabs, where I saw the sign for Crabby Pizza at Famous Pizza, I knew that would be a lunch stop during our visit. Often with crabby fries and pizza there is just a scoop of crab meat tossed on it and it can be disappointing to say the least. This was nothing like that. The crab was mixed into the sauce and cheese of the pizza – giving it a balance across. The fries were not overwhelming with Old Bay either!
Dinner in Chincoteague
Don’s Seafood Restaurant
For a nice dinner out, I can’t recommend Don’s enough! They were my first in-house dining experience since COVID hit and to say my anxiety was high is an understatement. We made reservations for inside seating for sunset over the bay. Masks were required and enforced when not at your table. The wait staff wore face masks in addition to their masks, making it safer for everyone! We enjoyed our seafood and steaks! I was a bit bloated after stuffing my face – but calories don’t count on vacation.
Spencer wouldn’t even let me take a quick pic before eating!
My crab legs which had plenty of butter and not too much Old Bay!
Homemade pita chips with crab dip (can you tell I love crab??)
Ice Cream in Chincoteague
Island Creamery and Mr. Whippy
There are two major ice creams in Chincoteague – one for hard ice cream (Island Creamery) and one for soft (Mr. Whippy). You’re on vacation – enjoy them both! These are easily the most well-known places to eat in Chincoteague so be prepared for a line at either.
Final Thoughts on Where to eat in Chincoteague, VA
Chincoteague is one of those hidden gems along the East Coast – away from the crowds but filled with beautiful nature. The cherry on top? An eclectic mixture of mouthwatering food – from food trucks to restaurants – Chincoteague has it all.
You had me a donuts! That looks like such a cute food truck to stop at. And pizza is my go to travel food as well.
Yum!! These places look amazing, I’d love to eat at Pico’s Taqueria!
