Whale Watching in Antarctica

Location: Whilhelmenia Bay, Antarctica

How do I know it’s ethical?

Whale watching in Antarctica features wild whales. You’re not guaranteed to see the animals but because of the quantity of krill (that naturally occurs) in the area, there is a good chance. Any Antarctica cruises must be certified by the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO) in how to keep a safe distance from the animals to protect them. While many species of whales can be spotted here, humpback whales are the most common.

Description of the Experience

Upon arrival at Wilhelmenia Bay, the ship stopped outside the bay and we loaded into smaller zodiac boats. These helped to protect the whales from the large boat. One of the most dangerous things for whales is the engine of a boat that can injure or kill them.

Zodiac boats can take between 8-15 people depending on size. Once everyone is loaded into the boat, the guide describes the next few steps and the animals’ behaviors. When a tail of a humpback whale goes straight in the air, it means they are diving deep down. They’ll blow a circle of bubbles to bring the krill to the surface and then come straight up with their mouths to catch the krill.

The guide keeps an eye on the tail and how it is down to try to prevent getting too close to the animal. Seeing these majestic creatures living their life peacefully was an incredibly powerful experience.

Company/ Cost:

Depends on the company you visit with, but usually included in the cruise.

I cruised to Antarctica with Hurtigruten cruises and I recommend them to anyone who asks.
