Gorilla trekking in this lush African country is an ethical animal encounter that benefits both animals and the local community. It’s a bucket list experience that is indescribable.
One of the biggest questions though – is how much does gorilla trekking in Uganda cost? While Rwanda is famous for gorillas, Uganda’s trekking is more affordable for the same animals but still has a hefty cost. I’ll break down the Uganda Gorilla Trekking Cost, so you can see where you can and can not save money. Permits, accommodation, food, guides, and transportation all influence the cost.

You (or your safari company) must book gorilla permits months in advance, especially since the number of permits issued each day is limited to minimize the impact on the gorillas and their habitat. The full experience of gorilla trekking not only covers the act of tracking and observing these magnificent creatures but also encompasses the surrounding aspects of journeying through the heart of East Africa’s lush green landscapes.
Accommodation options near these parks range from budget lodges to luxury lodges, each influencing the cost differently. Transportation is another key factor, and choices vary from using driving yourself, hiring a safari company, or hiring private vehicles for the journey. Meals play a small part in the budget since most accommodation includes some meals. If you’re driving yourself though, be sure to budget for food and snacks.
Gorilla trekking permit
A key prerequisite for gorilla trekking in Uganda is obtaining a gorilla trekking permit. As of now, for foreign non-residents, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has made the permit cost at $800. Foreign residents can acquire the permit at a reduced cost of $700, while East African citizens are charged 250,000 UGX. Those looking to engage in a more staff-intensive gorilla habituation experience would need $1,500 for a permit if they’re foreign non-residents or $1,000 for foreign residents, with East African citizens again paying less, at 750,000 UGX. These costs are per person per trek.
It is essential to secure these permits from UWA or through recognized tour operators like Africa Adventure Vacations, providing them with the desired dates and specific gorilla destinations within the national parks (Such as Volcanoes National Park or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest). It is wise to book well ahead of time, as permits are in high demand and limited in number to protect the natural habitat of the mountain gorillas.
Children under 15 are not allowed to partake in these treks, ensuring safety for both young visitors and the gorilla families.
Transportation
Transportation is a considerable part of the overall gorilla trekking costs, encompassing the journey to and from the national parks. The rugged terrain leading to Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks necessitates the use of sturdy vehicles. Do not trust Google Maps to give you an accurate time frame for driving from point A to point B. The roads in Uganda are often not paved, and due to landslides and floods are quite bumpy. Be sure to bring some non-drowsy Dramamine if you’re prone to motion sickness.
Various types of vehicles are available for hire, from small 4x4s suitable for solo travelers or couples to larger Land Cruisers fit for groups, with daily rental rates ranging from $45 to $300, not including fuel.
Strategically located lodges and tour operators usually offer airport transfers to trekking destinations in comfortable 4×4 vehicles. The transfer cost varies between $100 to $250, depending on the distance from the airport, with Kigali International Airport providing closer access to the gorilla trekking destinations compared to Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport. However, you do have to cross a land border which may increase the cost of the car. These transportation considerations allow trekkers to balance their budget, time constraints, and preferences when planning their journey.
I highly suggest hiring a company to handle driving as they are more familiar with the roads, rules, and regulations. Also, if something goes wrong, they have the contacts. No one expects a flat tire.
Accommodation
When it comes to accommodation, there are so many options for gorilla trekkers that cater to different tastes and budgets. Lodges in the vicinity of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park range from basic and budget-friendly to opulent luxury lodges, all offering unique experiences of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and its stunning biodiversity.

Porters
I highly suggest hiring a porter for gorilla trekking. Even if you’re not as clumsy as me, they’re an incredible resource. They are usually locals who know the mountain gorilla family, the habitation that you’re walking in, and are great company. They cost around $20 to hire before the trek, and they do expect a tip after. Be sure that your cash is clean of marks, crisp, and dated after 2009. Additional activity pricing
While the gorilla trek permit costs $800, you can add on more for a truly extraordinary experience in Uganda. Instead of just spending one hour with the mountain gorilla family, you can help habituate gorillas with a three hour visit. The gorilla habituation permit does cost more, but it helps provide to the conservation of mountain gorillas. I honestly wish I knew about this before I got to Uganda because it would have been so cool to spend more time with the lowland gorillas!
In addition to gorilla trekking, you can extend your time in Uganda and go on safaris to see more animals. Head to Queen Elizabeth National Park to try to find the tree-climbing lions or head to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to walk with rhinos!
