Spending Two Days in Berlin, Germany

A weekend trip to Berlin sounds like great fun, but when you try to pack too many things into one tiny weekend, it becomes more of a marathon. When you only have two days in Berlin, it’s important to prioritize! Plan your itinerary to include some of the highlights and add a few tours to cover more of the city.

Berlin holds many secrets that are begging to be unlocked and it will leave a lasting impression on you for years to come. Listen to stories of the past, including West and East Berlin and the infamous Berlin Wall.

You can spend time soaking up the city’s history, then delve into its present, and even get glimpses of the future. The best part of Berlin, though, is the people and their unwavering love of their city.

Travel Tip: Learn how to get from Berlin Airport to the city center before you go!

Store your bags before/after your hotel stay!

One of the hardest things when doing a weekend getaway is what to do with your luggage when before check-in and after check-out. There’s so much time that you could be exploring, but lugging around bags can be overwhelming.

While out sightseeing and exploring the city, leave your bags at a luggage storage service – like Bounce – for safekeeping. Avoid bag checks and the overall hassle of carrying your luggage through the city!

Brandenburg Gate

This iconic landmark is a must for every visitor to Berlin. Built during the 18th century by Prussian King Frederick William II, the Brandenburg Gate became a symbol of the separation of West and East Berlin.

This bridge has been the backdrop for thousands of selfies through the years and is a fantastic place to learn about the history of West and East Berlin. When the Berlin Wall fell and the city was united again, the gate became a symbol of hope and unity.

Berlin Wall

No trip to Berlin is complete without seeing at least a piece of the Berlin Wall. You’ll probably pass it on public transportation, but I really recommend walking along it. The artwork along the wall is incredibly detailed and powerful to see up close.

The Berlin Wall is one of the best things to see during two days in Berlin.

Fernsehturm Berlin

Also known as the Berlin TV Tower, it is the tallest building in Berlin standing at 1,207 feet tall. The Fernsehturm Berlin is the place to go for an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the city.

Purchase a ticket and climb up the tower and snap some beautiful panoramic photos of Berlin and the surrounding countryside. You may want to consider a skip-the-line ticket or a VIP entrance ticket to avoid long wait times.

After going up to the observation deck, drop by the Berlin TV Tower Restaurant for a delicious meal and cocktails. You will want to make a reservation for the restaurant to ensure you have a table waiting for you.

Museum Island

You will find a rather unique experience on Spreeinsel, or Spree Island, in the middle of the Spree River. Spend several hours, or even an entire day, exploring all Museum Island has to offer.

There are five huge museums located here, each one built under the reign of a Prussian ruler. You will also want to check out the James Simon Gallery, an exhibition hall that hosts special events. Grab your tickets online before you go.

Berliner Dom

Also known as the Berlin Cathedral, this marvelous attraction is a breathtaking Protestant church that was built in 1905. Located on Museum Island, you can save time during your weekend trip by visiting the five museums and then taking a tour of the Berliner Dom

Visit the Hohenzollern Crypt while at the Berliner Dom, where kings and queens have been laid to rest. View mesmerizing mosaics sprinkled throughout the church, and enjoy colorful and historic artwork.

Reichstag Building

This historical glass-domed building is home to the Parliament, and it was the former home of the Imperial Diet of the German Empire from 1894 to 1933. The Reichstag Building was damaged by fire in 1933 but has since been reconstructed.

Entrance to the Reichstag is free but you do have to have a reservation. You may also want to consider joining a tour group or signing up for a private tour. You can only make reservations online

Holocaust Memorial

The official name of the Holocaust Memorial is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and is an absolutely powerful memorial when you see it in person. This memorial pays tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

The victims shall never be forgotten as the Holocaust Memorial keeps their memories alive in the hearts of all who visit. It is free to visit the memorial and is a must-see while on your weekend trip to Berlin.

Walking Tour

There is really no better way to experience Berlin than by taking a walking tour through the city! When you only have a few days to explore and experience this historic city, then a tour on foot is an absolute must.

The best part about most walking tours is that they are free to join; you just need to tip your tour guide for sharing their time and knowledge. Wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera, and prepare to be amazed.

There are walking tours that do charge, but these generally also include admission to some of the attractions with skip-the-line access so you do not have to stand in long lines. You can search for themed tours that might interest you.

Tour Berlin in a Trabi

So what exactly is a Trabi? Also known as a Trabant, this noisy, very slow little car was manufactured in East Berlin and is now an iconic vehicle that symbolizes the past when Germany was divided

Today, there are several of these little noisy cars that are available for rent. Doing so is probably the most fun you will have even in the heat of the summer with no air conditioning! A knowledgeable guide will drive you or you can drive yourself around.

You can choose from several different Trabi rental companies such as TrabantBerlin to find the right fit for your needs. Rent a Trabi for a day or the entire weekend you are in Berlin for a unique and fun way to view the city.

Final thoughts on Two Days in Berlin

Two days in Berlin is the perfect way to dip your toes into the culture and history of Germany. Visit some of the top sights, meet some very interesting people, and dine on authentic German cuisine.

While on your weekend trip to Berlin, you will make memories that will last a lifetime and make you want to come back and explore more and more. It may just become your new favorite destination!

  1. There’s so much history in Germany and I’d love to visit one day. I also think that if you only have a short time in a destination that a walking tour is best. It’s the quickest pay to learn the history. I’d love to see the Berlin Wall and especially the Holucost Memorial. I’m sure that would be something I’d never forget.
