Toronto, Canada

Submitted by Melinda of Mel on the Go.

At the time of this writing, the Canadian border is closed to American visitors. Please refer to government announcements for when the borders are open again.

Toronto is a perfect weekend getaway on the East Coast! Canada’s largest city is easy to get to from most places. The strong US dollar, cleanliness, and polite Canadians will make you want to visit Toronto. Here are my must-do’s in Toronto.

ART: Art fans must visit the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and Graffiti Alley. The AGO exhibits a massive collection of art from around the world, including Canada’s own Group of Seven. No less impressive is the blocks-long outdoor exhibit Graffiti Alley, one of Toronto’s most Instagrammable locales.

Toront's Graffi Alley is one of the highlights you'll see here. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

Travel Tip: In between, visit Chinatown and Kensington Market for people-watching and good grub.

FOOD: St. Lawrence Market. Best on Saturdays with an outdoor farmer’s market and indoor food stalls. Go hungry and try a peameal bacon sandwich, authentic local food.

OUTDOORS: Take the ferry to the city’s biggest park, Toronto Islands, and photograph the views of the skyline on the way! Once there, rent bikes and ride around, take your kids to the amusement park, or go to the beach.

NIGHTLIFE: Ossington Avenue packs a weekend’s worth of fun in four short blocks between Queen and Dundas. Shop, hear music, eat, and drink.

Travel Tip: Union Restaurant serves delicious farm to table food for brunch and dinner on weekends.

SPORTS: Canada’s only MLB team The Toronto Blue Jays play downtown. Or go see the only English rugby team on the continent at The Toronto Wolfpack.

May-July are the best times to visit, with good weather and multiple outdoor festivals.

Montreal, Canada

Recommended by Me, the Directionally Challenged Traveler

Montreal was one of the cities I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did! Get the vibes of Europe without the long plane ride! Located about 45 minutes from the border, most people drive to Montreal, but you can also fly to the city.

As Canada’s second-largest city, it has a wide array of activities, museums, and don’t forget – the incredible food! From freshly baked baguettes to savory cheese, your taste buds will be delighted with everything Montreal has to offer. Get captivated by the 19th-century architecture of Old Montreal. While it’s the tourist center of the city, it shouldn’t be missed. There are plenty of places to shop – both touristy and unique boutiques. Pop into a restaurant that catches your eye – like Chez Eric – located right in Plaza Jacques-Cartier.

For a break from the hustle of the city, head to Mont-Royal Park. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the same person who designed New York’s Central Park. There are a number of walking paths, picnic areas, and monuments – but the real gem is the city overlook. Head to Belvedere Kondiaronk (closed when I visited for renovations), but typically has a restaurant and bathrooms available. Near Mont Royal is the beautiful St. Joseph’s Oratory. It’s Canada’s largest church and almost a match of St. Peter’s in Rome.

La Biosphere is a geodesic dome that served as the American Pavilion for the 1967 World’s Fair, but today is home to an interactive science facility! The Notre Dame Basilica, while smaller than Notre Dame in Paris, is worth a stop in the heart of Montreal. A little outside the city is the Jean-Talon Market. I highly recommend anything maple flavored (especially the maple-baklava), but that’s just me. They have a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, crepes, cheeses, and charcuterie meats.

Montreal is one of the best weekend getaways on the east coast due to its enchanting personality!

Bar Harbor, Maine

Submitted by Ale of Sea Salt and Fog.

Bar Harbor, Maine has some of the most breathtaking views in New England, making it one of the best coastal cities for a weekend getaway. Bar Harbor is located about a 2.5-hour drive north of Portland, Maine, and about 5 hours from Boston. In Bar Harbor, the rocky Maine shoreline shines in sharp contrast to stunning forests and mountains. The city is intrinsically linked to Acadia National Park, so Bar Harbor has a multitude of outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking and biking.

Maine's Bar Harbor is abeautiful desination filled with nature, cliffs, and the ocean. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

When you visit, make sure you wake up early to watch the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain. During part of the year, this is the first place in North America to see the sunrise. If you’re more of a night owl, head up to Cadillac Mountain at night to stargaze, but bundle up, it gets chilly up there! Cadillac Mountain is a must-do, especially when you only have two days in Acadia National Park or Bar Harbor.

In downtown Bar Harbor, check out the shops, including the oldest bookstore in Maine, Sherman’s. Take a walk along the shore and spot the boats and many islands off the coast.

For breakfast, check out Café This Way for the best blueberry pancakes you’ll ever have.

If you visit in the fall, you’ll see the stunning New England fall foliage in full display. Bar Harbor is a picturesque city along the Maine coast and one you should have on your weekend getaway list.

Freeport, Maine

Submitted by May at EatCookExplore.

On a road trip from Boston to Vermont, we were advised to make a stop in Freeport. There is a lot of history along this coast. You will find houses that date back over 200 years.  What appealed to us was that the town’s a shopper’s paradise, with hundreds of outlet stores and boutiques. The main attraction is the 24-hour LL Bean store, which is also pet-friendly.

We were there in the middle of the leaf-peeping season and it was busy. It is possibly the most glorious drive we have had, with both sides of the highway lined the shimmering multi-colored maple trees, from dark red to yellow to gold.

Maine lobster. That is the other reason we stopped here. Not that you can’t get lobster all along the coast but lobster and shopping is a perfect combination for gourmet travelers. We found a place that had a whole menu of lobster dishes. We ate well, feasting on lobster rolls, lobster bisque, and bits of deep fried lobster.

After dinner, we had to go to LL Bean. Even though we didn’t intend to buy a lot, we ended having to buy an extra suitcase to fill up with flannel sheets, discounted cashmere, and outdoor gear. The bargains were too hard to pass up. It will be a great place to go shopping for holiday gifts.

We’d definitely go back there again and again which is why we recommend Freeport as a great weekend getaway on the east coast.

Lincoln, New Hampshire

Submitted by Nichole of Nichole the Nomad.

New Hampshire is known for its beautiful lakes and incredible mountain views. The small town of Lincoln is no different. Nestled in the White Mountains two hours north of Boston, Lincoln offers a little bit of everything, including hiking, biking, rock climbing, ice climbing, skiing, waterfalls, swimming holes, and incredible fall foliage. Downtown Lincoln has accommodation options, restaurants, breakfast diners, breweries, and anything else you need to complete a perfect weekend away!

In the summer, Lincoln offers endless hiking opportunities with over 83 trails. One of the best hikes near Lincoln is a difficult 9-mile trail to Mount Lincoln and Mount Lafayette. The trail passes multiple waterfalls and follows along a ridge with incredible views and is known for being one of the most beautiful hikes in New Hampshire. If you are looking for something short and sweet, the 1.5-mile trail to Artist’s Bluff and Bald Mountain is a perfect option. It is a beautiful spot to view sunrise or sunset over a famous view of Franconia Notch.

Travel Tip: In the fall, Lincoln is home to one of the most beautiful foliage drives in the world!

The Kancamagus Highway begins in Lincoln and weaves through the beautiful White Mountains for 34 miles. It offers scenic overlooks, waterfalls, hiking trails, swimming holes, and opportunities to see wildlife.

In the winter, Lincoln offers over 200 trails for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing on Loon Mountain, Cannon Mountain, and Waterville Valley. Lincoln is also home to one of six Ice Castles in North America. Professional ice artists hand place hundreds of thousands of icicles each year to create a beautiful Ice Castle that you can walk through.

With something to do in every season, Lincoln is a perfect place for a weekend away year-round!

Boston, Massachusettes

Submitted by Krystianna of Volumes and Voyages.

The best east coast city for a weekend getaway is Boston! It’s a major sports city right on the water that’s filled with history. What’s not to love?

While you’re in Boston, be sure to check out some of the non-touristy areas to avoid crowds. Sure, you should visit Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market at least once, but if you can save it for a time that isn’t as busy (such as during the day on weekdays) then you’ll be happy!

Newbury Street is one of the best non-touristy sites in Boston. It’s a long street lined by brick stores. Trust me, you could easily spend a lot of time here if you aren’t watching your clock! Right nearby is the Prudential Center, but I don’t suggest visiting there in addition to Newbury Street unless you plan on going to the Skywalk Observatory. This observatory will give you panoramic views of Boston for a small fee!

Boston's eclectic mixture of history and modern buildings is a breath of fresh air! One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.
A mixture of modern and history awaits you in Boston. Photo by Volumes & Voyages

A weekend in Boston wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the North End. This is the best area to find Italian cuisine and desserts. There’s an abundance of great pastry shops, but I suggest checking out either Bova’s Bakery, Modern Pastry, or Mike’s Pastry. The cannolis and tiramisu from this area of the city are to die for!

There are loads of other great places to eat in Boston too. Try checking out Boston Burger Co. for some of the biggest burgers and milkshakes you’ll ever see or Blackbird Doughnut to grab a Boston Creme!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Submitted by Sean of Living Out Lau.

The US east coast is filled with big metropolitan cities such as New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and more. As a result, a small beach town area such as Cape Cod is the perfect weekend escape from the madness that these metropolises are known for. Located on the southeastern corner of mainland Massachusetts, this incredible geographic mass contains over sixty public beaches, perfect for anyone looking for a summer beach getaway. Though the beaches are some big attractions in Cape Cod, the area also features huge stretches of walking paths for anyone looking to spend some time in nature.

The colorful houses are just part of the charm of Cape Cod. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

Anyone that hasn’t been to Cape Cod often thinks that it is a tiny place and easily navigable. In fact, Cape Cod spans a total area of 880-square kilometers with 15 small towns. The one town you must not miss is the hip and relaxing Provincetown. Located on the northern tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown (or P-town for short) is known for its huge LGBTQ scene, artistic vibes, and overall liveliness. Walk down the popular Commercial Street and immerse yourself in the music, fresh seafood restaurants, art galleries and fully de-stress from the bustling city life. After exploring the town, relax on some of the most pristine beaches on the east coast of the USA. Don’t forget to end your night at one of the charming inns and guesthouses scattered around town!

Block Island, Rhode Island

Submitted by Erin of Unmapped Blog.

Thirteen miles south of Rhode Island you’ll find a new piece of paradise right on the East Coast: Block Island. There’s something for every type of traveler on Block Island, where East Coast charm meets a beachy haven you’ll never want to leave. Getting to Block Island is an adventure all in itself – you can either take the ferry or fly in on a small puddle jumper plane. Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself in what feels like the setting of a Nicholas Sparks novel. Imagine walking down the street with views of the water in the background, passing small-town quaint cottages, ice cream parlors, and mom & pop shops all while a salty summer breeze blows in.

Your first stop has to be the beaches beneath the famous Mohegan Bluffs: a 200-foot cliff overlooking a rocky, yet stunning, beach. You’ll need to walk down (and back up!) the 141-step walkway to get down to the sand and surf, but the experience is unlike any other on the East Coast.

Block Island Rhode Island is a piece of paradise, making it one of the Best East Coast Weekend Getaway ideas.

In between wining, dining, and beach-ing, experience the 3-by-7-mile island via bike and explore the winding scenic roads that will lead you to enchanting views every which way. From the two lighthouses on the island to wildlife refuges, hiking trails and even a labyrinth, there’s no shortage of ways to unplug and enjoy nature around you.

If you aren’t one to get lost in the scenery, there’s plenty of nightlife and entertainment on the island. Between live music at local bars and restaurants, plus a thriving art and theater community, there’s truly something for everyone when you spend a weekend on Block Island.

Newport, Rhode Island

Recommended by Me, The Directionally Challenged Traveler

A quaint small town getaway on the east coast, Newport is an idyllic location. A bit cooler in the summer months due to being on an island, and less crowded in other seasons – the weather is perfect. Take a tour of the huge mansions (including houses owned by Jay Leno and Judge Judy!) and even tour some of the famous mansions like The Breakers. I was impressed with the variety of things to do in Newport!

Be sure to start your day with breakfast at Cru Cafe, right behind the Autobain museum. Their blueberry stuffed French toast is amazing! In the afternoon (especially in the shoulder seasons), head to the Cliff Walk. It’s 3 and a half miles of coastline behind mansions. There are a few parking areas throughout the walk so you can do as much or as little as you want. To get up close to the cliffs, there is an area called the 40 Steps that lead down for a new perspectives.

Milford, Connecticut

Recommended by Me, The Directionally Challenged Traveler

If you’re looking for a quintessential New England getaway, then the small town of Milford is the place for you. Coming out of the show Gilmore Girls, this small town feels like a real-life Stars Hollow. You can find festivals almost every weekend throughout the year, ranging from Sours Beer Fest, to Hot Air Balloon Festival, and even a Yoga Festival! Even just a stroll by the Milford harbor is a great way to spend a Saturday morning.

Escape to Milford’s Silver Sands State Park for a beach without the crowds, or explore the 1800’s-era buildings and history at the Boothe Memorial Park. Milford was settled in 1639, which means it’s brimming with historical character and personality. No matter how you spend your day , be sure to get some fresh seafood at some point! Preferably from Seven Seas Restaurant or the Lobster Hut!

Milford Connecticut's harbro is a great place to enjoy a seaside sunset. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

Catskills, New York

Submitted by Lucile of Lucile HR.

If you fancy a relaxing weekend getaway on the East Coast and take a break from the busy NYC, I’d recommend the Catskills in a heartbeat. Located southeast of the New York State, the Catskills region is a perfect place for contemplating.

The breathtaking views of the landscape make it easier for you to focus on your meditation practice. If you’re like me and regularly practices yoga, the raw sound of nature will also be the perfect background music if you want to unroll your mat and unwind!

The hikes in the Catskills are beautiful and allow you to connect with nature. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.
The Catskills are home to some amazing hikes and waterfalls!

There are gorgeous hotels, cozy cabins, and full-service retreats you can enjoy. The Catskills can offer the best accommodation you’re looking for just to make you feel comfortable. And if you want a more adventurous experience, you can also camp under the stars – which I would personally prefer.

Not only that, but Catskills also offers plenty of opportunities for anyone who likes to stick to their fitness routine. You can marvel at the beauty of nature as you explore the wooded hiking trails of this mountain region.

Whether you’re going on a leisurely nature trip or a more peaceful getaway, a visit to the Catskills is worthwhile, no matter the time of the year. The best part is – it’s just two hours away from New York City.

Travel Tip: Another way to explore without flying would be is taking a river cruise in the United States!

New York City's Statue of Liberty is one of the ways you can spend a weekend in the city. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

New York City, New York

Recommended by Me, The Directionally Challenged Traveler

New York City has something for every type of traveler – even those who aren’t really “city” fans. During an east coast weekend getaway, you can do anything from exploring America’s history at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to taking in the shopping in Manhattan! You can even create your own itinerary around your interests – such as this Hamilton-inspired itinerary for New York!

Since a weekend away is not a lot of time in this city, I suggest picking a focus for your time and basing your travels around that. You don’t want to spend most of your weekend trying to navigate the NYC subway.

Jersey Shore, New Jersey

Recommended by Me, The Directionally Challenged Traveler

As a Jersey girl born and raised – New Jersey shores are my go-to weekend getaway destination. With over 100 miles of shoreline, I can guarantee that you’ll find a beach that fits your interest! Whether it’s the family boardwalk of Wildwood in the south, the casinos of Atlantic City, the popular bars of the Seaside boardwalk, or the peaceful waves of Sandy Hook – New Jersey has something to offer all visitors.

The Jersey Shore has over 100 miles of shoreline - meaning you can find the perfect beach for you. One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

If sitting on the beach calls to you, then enjoy the crashing waves. However, if you’re more of an adventure-seeker, there’s kayaking, jet-skiing, and even parasailing! One of my favorite things to do is to take a charter fishing boat and catch fresh fish to cook that evening. Freshly caught flounder is delicious.

Philadelphia is one of the best cities in America. It’s full of history, culture, delicious foods, and friendly people. There are so many things to do in Philadelphia that it’s a perfect east coast destination for an east coast getaway.

Some of the best museums in the country are found in Philadelphia like the Franklin Institute of Science, The American Independence Museum, and the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art (also known for being the “Rocky steps”. Historical sites like Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Betsy Ross House are all popular attractions. The oldest residential street in America is Elfreth’s Alley in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood.

Philadelphia's Independence Hall is a must-visit during a weekend getaway! One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

Philadelphia is home to a thriving culinary scene because top chefs prefer the lower overhead costs of opening a restaurant in Philly over New York City. There are also regional food favorites like the cheesesteak, tomato pie, soft pretzel and Italian water ice. Philadelphia’s Italian Market and Reading Terminal Market are among the best food halls in the nation.

Philadelphia is easy to navigate, clean, safe and a lot of fun. The city has wonderful nightlife, attractions, foods and fun. Spend a weekend or longer in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, and discover for yourself all the fantastic things waiting in this east coast gem of a destination.

Delaware is called ‘The First State’ and has so much history attached to it. Head over to The First State Heritage Park and take the free tour if you are interested in the history of the state. Baltimore, Maryland

If you’re on the East Coast, one underrated city to visit is Baltimore, Maryland. Somewhat overshadowed by nearby Washington, D.C., Baltimore is actually the perfect weekend destination from D.C. Whether taking a family trip, a romantic getaway, or a solo trip, Baltimore has something for everyone. For history buffs, check out the original Washington Monument and the Walters Art Museum, both found in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood. To entertain kids, visit the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, and Port Discovery Children’s Museum. For sports fans, take in a game at Camden Yards or M&T Bank Stadium.

Regardless of the type or length of your trip, a must-visit area of Baltimore is the Inner Harbor. Washington D.C.

Submitted by Emily of Daltons Destinations.

DC delivers a diverse culinary scene, excellent museums, noble memorials, and more! This makes Washington DC is one of the best weekend getaways on the east coast since it has so much to offer visitors! Spend the weekend exploring this historical city.

DC can get very hot in the summer (the high 90s), so my recommendation is to go in autumn or spring. In the spring you can witness the gorgeous cherry blossom festival!

Where to Eat: There are so many wonderful restaurants to try in DC. One of my favorite cafes is PAUL. And don’t forget to stop by Georgetown for deliciously-famous cupcakes!

Sunset near the Thomas Jefferson memorial is a must-visit during One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast.

Monuments and Memorials: Washington DC is filled with American history and it can be a bit daunting. Walk around the Tidal Basin and find a spot to watch the sunset at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. There are some great viewpoints near the base of the Washington Monument; sadly you are no longer able to climb to the top (due to damage caused by an earthquake back in 2011). The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial is a small but lovely park to walk through, especially when all the flowers are in bloom! Of course, you cannot miss the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Enjoy the scenery and gorgeous flowers! The Lincoln Memorial stands magnificently in front of the reflection pool. Be sure to take the iconic photo with the penny!

Historical sites: A trip to DC isn’t complete without a visit to the White House. It has been the home of USA presidents since the 1800s. If you want to book an inside tour, you must do so through your Member of Congress. The Capitol Building is another icon of Washington D.C. You may have to put on your walking shoes for this one as the tour is a bit long. A tour inside is around $18 per person. The tour is just amazing and so fun to see the big dome!

If you’re a history or architecture fan – be sure to check out DC Design Tours! With a focus on architecture and design – you’ll be amazed at what DC has to offer!

Williamsburg, Virginia

Submitted by Dan Bagby of CabinCritic and Lyndsay of The Purposely Lost.

Williamsburg is a perfect east coast getaway for anyone interested in thrills or American history.  Spend a day or the entire weekend enjoying the world-class theme parks, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and Water Country USA. Busch Gardens is a European themed amusement park with numerous roller coasters, kiddy rides and everything in between. It is well known for its shows, beauty, and food. Water Country USA is a large water park with a huge wave pool and spiraling water slides perfect for cooling off during the hot summer days. There are also many breweries and vineyards around the city. Take a tastings tour, and make for a romantic evening out.

Travel Tip: For a relaxing day, head a half-hour south and hit Virginia Beach!

The area is full of historic sites that can take you back in time. Walk in the footsteps of Pocahontas and the settlers from the first permanent English settlement. Spend some time exploring Historic Williamsburg which was the center of political activity leading to the American Revolution where Thomas Jefferson and George Washington met together.

Since Williamsburg is part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, there are two other historic towns right next door–Jamestown and Yorktown. Explore the Jamestown settlement, and view Revolutionary War battlefields at Yorktown, to round out the history. You can easily access these sites by car to add to your Williamsburg itinerary.

Chincoteague Island, Virginia

explored by me, The Directionally Challenged Traveler

This quaint beach town is often overlooked for the hustle and bustle of Ocean City, Maryland or Virginia Beach! (Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if it stayed that way!) The bike-friendly town welcomes visitors all year long. You can spend time on neighboring Assateague Island, with over 30 miles of beaches, you don’t have to worry about being crowded! You can also spot wild horses, bald eagles, blue herons, and dolphins! Hike through the wildlife refuge, visit the Chincoteague Lighthouse, or shop at one of the many mom-and-pop shops in town. There are so many things to do in Chincoteague – I was so impressed with how jam-packed we were!

Me with some of my family at sunrise! Chincoteague Island is a great weekend getaway on the east coast because of it's less-commercialized.
Some of the family who were brave enough to wake up early and fight the mosquitoes for sunrise!

While visiting, be sure to check out Sandy Pony Donuts for breakfast – their fresh donuts are DELICIOUS and just the sugar rush you need in the morning. (Remember, calories don’t count on vacation!) For lunch, head to Pico’s Taqueria for unique tacos, or Famous Pizzeria for their crabby pizza. Don’s Seafood is a great place for fresh seafood that overlooks the bay and is perfect for a sunset dinner. For dessert, stop at Island Creamery for hard ice cream or Mr. Whippy’s for soft ice cream – but be prepared to wait – the lines at both are a bit long. The wait is worth it to make your weekend getaway perfect!

Travel Tip: Head to the beach for sunrise – it’s worth the wake up time, but be sure to wear bug spray – the mosquitoes were vicious!

The breathtaking Outer Banks is one of the best East Coast weekend getaways because of its beautiful beaches, but there is so much more this area has to offer. The Outer Banks is actually 200 miles long (320 kilometers) and encompasses a number of towns.

Asheville is the perfect weekend getaway destination for outdoor-lovers and beer aficionados alike. This adventurous town is located in the heart of the North Carolina mountains and surrounded by Pisgah & Nantahala National Forests and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

A few favorites that you should definitely visit are Highland Brewing, Sierra Nevada, and Wicked Weed. Asheville was named Beer City USA four times in a row so you know you’re in good hands.

Not only is Asheville at the forefront of the craft beer movement, but also the Farm-to-Table movement. You’ll have plenty of delicious restaurants to try in the area but don’t miss Sunny Point Cafe, Tupelo Honey, or visit the Biltmore Estate and dine at one of their many restaurants.

The Biltmore is also a must-see on your visit as it’s the largest home in the US. The house is gorgeous, but there are so many other things to do on the estate grounds. The gardens and greenhouse are beautiful places for a walk and they have hiking trails for guests to use. They have options for fishing, horseback riding, and even falconry. The closest winery to downtown is located in Antler Hill Village.

Charleston, South Carolina

Submitted by Rachel of Means to Explore and Eddie & Kelli of The Vanabond Tales.

This quiet colonial town has blossomed into a top-rated destination for the US! History, beaches, and entertainment are all here and within easy walking distance from downtown hotels. It’s easy to see why Travel & Leisure consistently ranks this port city as the best in the US year after year. Age-old oak trees draped with Spanish moss and charming antebellum homes line the streets surrounding the historic city center making Charleston the picture-perfect weekend destination.

Take a horse carriage tour of the downtown historic district, walk the Battery and Waterfront Park, or sign up for a nearby plantation tour. Stroll through City Market and shop for unique souvenirs and scrumptious snacks. Don’t miss the free samples at the fudge and candy confectioners across the street!

Just across the Cooper River in Mount Pleasant is Patriot’s Point. If it’s raining, explore the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, and if it’s sunny, take the ferry out to Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston Harbor. It is here where the Confederate Army first fired shots in the American Civil War. For history buffs, a visit to Fort Sumter is a must to learn of Charleston’s pivotal roles in our country’s rich history. End your day at one of Charleston’s rooftop bars for some good ole’ southern hospitality and gorgeous sunset views of the harbor.

Head over to Market Street and stroll through the Historic Charleston City Market, one of the nation’s most culturally significant and oldest markets. Make sure to grab a sweetgrass basket made by the local Gullah people while visiting the market. From here stroll along East Bay Street towards Rainbow Row, one of the most iconic locations in Charleston. Continue your walk onward to The Battery past more classic Charlestonian architecture and take in the beauty of this charming city.

Need a beach day? Cruise across the iconic Arthur Ravenel cable-stayed bridge and hit up the Isle of Palms public beach! Or you can drive to a handful of beaches within an hour’s drive or less from downtown! Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island or Edisto Beach are all awesome city-escapes

Travel Tip: Have some more time on your South Carolina trip? Congaree National Park is only 2 hours away and a perfect day trip!

For a relaxed brunch or comfort food dinner, check out Poogan’s Porch on Queen Street in one of Charleston’s well-preserved Victorian homes. If you prefer BBQ, check out their sister site, Poogan’s Steakhouse, on East Bay Street. Don’t forget the white cheddar grits! If you love southern cooking check out Magnolias, Amen Street Fish & Raw Bar, and High Cotton!

Atlanta, Georgia

Submitted by Becky of Becky and Ryan Travel.

With so much to see and do in Atlanta, it’s hard to pack it all into one weekend! Atlanta is a sprawling city with many diverse neighborhoods (but a poor transit system) so plan to rent a car or take Ubers to get a feel for what the city has to offer!

For the most popular attractions, visit the Georgia Aquarium and The World of Coca-Cola which are right next to each other downtown. Mercedes Benz Stadium is also nearby and you’re guaranteed to have a good time if you can catch an Atlanta United game!

For natural beauty, Piedmont Park is a large and well-maintained park in the center of Midtown with great walking paths and a beautiful view of the ATL skyline. The Atlanta Botanical Garden, with colorful and creative exhibits, is right around the corner. Do yourself a favor while you’re over here and stop at The Nook for some “Tachos”.

For something trendy, the latest Atlanta hot spot is Ponce City Market, which is a renovated historic building turned into a mixed-use development. It’s full of the hottest shops and restaurant and has an unparalleled view of the city.

For a perfect Atlanta meal, stop by Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Along with an extensive menu of delicious, down-home Southern cookin’, Mary Mac’s has tons of history and charm. If you’re looking for an edgier meal (or an amazing burger), check out The Vortex in Little 5 Points.

Savannah, Georgia

One of the best weekend getaways on the east coast is Savannah, Georgia, a beautiful city filled with southern charm.

There are plenty of things to keep you busy while spending a long weekend in Savannah, but the top thing to do in the city is to simply walk around and explore the Historic District, taking in the beautiful architecture and wandering through the historic squares. If visiting historic homes is up your alley, stop in one of the many antebellum mansions that are open for visitors. One of the most famous is the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, which has now been converted into a museum. After exploring the Historic District, take a break and relax at Forsyth Park, where you can sit in front of the famous fountain and people-watch for hours.

Savannah is believed to be one of the most haunted US cities, and the best way to explore the city’s spooky past is a ghost tour. There are tons of different tours offered throughout the city, from family-friendly walking tours to haunted bar crawls for the adults. You can even bring along a to-go alcoholic drink while on your tour – in Savannah, it’s completely legal to walk around the Historic District with an alcoholic beverage in a plastic cup.

In addition to bars, Savannah is home to a ton of delicious restaurants, and sampling the local cuisine is a must when visiting the city. One of the best restaurants in town is The Olde Pink House, which serves up classic Southern dishes in a historic mansion. Make reservations ahead of time as the wait is often long.

Dunedin, Floria

Nestled west of Tampa along the warm, clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Dunedin delights anyone who ventures into her downtown or beach districts. With its charm, small town vibe, and multitude of great restaurants and activities, Dunedin makes the ideal East Coast weekend getaway. The proximity to two major airports – Tampa International and St. Pete/Clearwater – means it’s easy to get to Dunedin from any city that has an airport.

Should you choose to spend a couple of days exploring this quaint town, be sure to stay in one of the guest houses downtown. Options include 465 on Main, The Yellow House, Meranova Inn, and Beyond the Wall Bed & Breakfast. Not only will you experience the excellent service Dunedin is known for, you’ll find yourself walking distance to almost everything you need. Even if your lodging includes breakfast, try one morning at Crown and Bull or Clearsky Draught House. For dinner, every Dunedin visitor should try Hog Island Fish Camp or Café Alfresco. If you’re celebrating, splurge at Bon Appetit or The Restorative.

While in Dunedin, head two miles north to Honeymoon Island State Park. In this award-winning park, you can explore miles of beach, visit the nature center, and hike the two miles of nature trails. It’s an ideal place to spend the day and even has a café overlooking the Gulf of Mexico where you can eat lunch. On the way back to your B&B, stop at Frenchy’s Outpost Café for a fresh seafood dinner.

  1. I came across this post at exactly the right time! I planned to start looking at east coast road trips for the autumn colors today, just in case it is safe for us to do a social distancing camping trip in the fall! There are some great locations on this list I’m going to look into more!

  2. Great guide! I’d love to get to Washington one day, especially for all of the museums! There’s a ton I haven’t explored in the US. And while that won’t be possible this year I’m earmarking these destinations for the future!

  3. annddd now I want to move to New Hampshire! it looks etheral. Soo many amazing places that are accessible for a nice weekend. It’s really sad that domestic travel is so darn expensive otherwise we would be on the East Coast ALL THE TIME! Thank you for sharing some stunning images and giving us some great options for when we do make it over 🙂

  4. On my first trip to the States I took the greyhound bus up and down the east coast. The only downside was that it was January, and I hadn’t realized how cold it would be … but I loved every minute of it. It seemed very European in places.

  5. Who wants to go away on travel when the country has myriad of things to offer! USA has been high on my bucket list for so long now! I would love to visit each state and the national parks there! This list sure looks like a perfect place to start, and something that everyone local needs as they are looking at backyard travelling.

  6. Toronto, Montreal, NYC and DC are the only spots I have visited on the East Coast so this makes me want to go and explore so many more spots there! The east coast is so diverse and I would love to see the maritime provinces and states 🙂

  7. I love this post! So many great places to go (I’ll skip Toronto, as I’m Canadian and go there quite frequently). I have been to some of the places you have mentioned, but a roadtrip from Toronto to Boston will definitely be in order once the borders open.

  8. As for Italy people have already forgotten about the virus. They go out without masks and I think it’s very dangerous right now, may be a second wave might come.

  9. I am so happy to see Lincoln, NH on the list! This is truly one of the most beautiful places to visit in New England in the fall. I live on the East Coast myself, so thanks for the great north to south suggestions. Even though I’m not flying anywhere yet, these are great ideas. Baltimore has definitely been on my list.

    1. Yes, I’m from the east coast, so that’s why I focused on the east coast for driving 🙂 We’re doing a few local road trips this summer and fall because we don’t want to fly either!

  11. I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t really explored the East Coast at all, but I definitely should! Love that there is a mix of urban cities with nature and quaint, smaller towns in this post. Lots of great ideas for my next getaway!

  12. Well I’ve only been to 3 of these places so I think it’s time I get working on this list. I would love to spend time in some of the smaller places as it seems like mostly the big cities I’m drawn to when going somewhere new, but would love just a quiet weekend getaway sometime soon. Maine and New Hampshire as well as more of MA would be great to spend some time in

  13. All of these east coast spots are amazing! I still want to get to Bar Harbor, Maine (I’ve done Portland) along with New Hampshire. I also love all of those Southern destinations. 🙂

  14. Great roundup of East coast hot spots. I’m glad you included some outdoor spots because not everyone is a city visitor.
A really nice collection of destinations.

  15. The East Coast is so spoiled for choice. I used to live out in DC area so have done a good chunk of these, but never got up to Maine. Bucket list! Great list. 🙂
