2. Don’t bother bringing a car
When it comes to visiting Isla Mujeres, don’t bother bringing a car. This small island is easily navigable by golf cart or scooter.
With its size and limited roadways, bringing a car to Isla Mujeres is unnecessary. The island is only 4 miles long and half a mile wide, making it easy to explore by walking or using other modes of transportation. Plus, there’s only a few ferries that can take a car on them.
One of the most popular ways to get around the island is by renting a golf cart. This allows you to leisurely cruise through the streets and take in the sights at your own pace. Plus, it’s a fun and unique way to navigate the island.
Another alternative option is to use the public transportation system, which consists of taxis and small buses known as colectivos. These modes of transport are affordable and readily available, making it convenient to travel from one end of the island to the other.
If you’re staying in the hotel zone, many accommodations provide shuttle services or are within walking distance of popular attractions and beaches. This eliminates the need for a car altogether.
So, leave the car behind and embrace the relaxed island vibes of Isla Mujeres. You’ll find that foot navigation or utilizing alternative transportation options is the perfect way to fully experience this beautiful destination.
3. Rent A Golf Cart
Renting a golf cart on Isla Mujeres is a popular and convenient way to explore the island. There are several rental companies located throughout the island, making it easy to find a cart that suits your needs.
To rent a golf cart, simply head to one of the rental companies, which can be found at various locations on Isla Mujeres. The rental process is usually straightforward and hassle-free. Renting a golf cart offers numerous benefits for exploring Isla Mujeres. 4. Get on the right ferry
When planning your trip to Isla Mujeres, it’s important to choose the right ferry to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. There are two main ferry terminals that serve Isla Mujeres: Puerto Juarez and Playa Tortugas.
If you are coming from Cancun or the Hotel Zone, Puerto Juarez is the most convenient ferry terminal to use. It offers regular ferry services throughout the day, with departures approximately every 30 minutes. The ferry ride from Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres takes about 15 minutes and is a popular choice for both locals and tourists.
On the other hand, if you are staying in the Hotel Zone or near the Cancun International Airport, Playa Tortugas is a convenient option. This terminal offers frequent ferry departures as well, with a slightly longer ride of about 25 minutes.
When choosing a ferry service, it’s important to consider the schedules and prices. Both terminals offer multiple ferry companies, and the schedule may vary slightly between them. It’s recommended to check the ferry companies’ websites or inquire at your hotel for the most up-to-date schedule information. Overall, choosing the right ferry terminal and service will ensure a seamless journey to Isla Mujeres, allowing you to start exploring this beautiful island as soon as possible.
5. Watch for scams on the boat
When taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres, it’s important to be aware of common scams that can target tourists. One common scam is ticket overcharging, where tourists are charged more than the actual price for ferry tickets. To avoid falling prey to this scam, always double-check the official price of the tickets and refuse to pay any extra fees.
Another scam involves fake ticket sellers who claim to be offering discounted or special tickets. It’s important to only purchase tickets from the official ferry terminals to avoid being scammed by these fraudsters.
Dishonest taxi drivers can also try to take advantage of tourists by overcharging for their services. To avoid this, always use reputable taxi services and ask for the fare to be agreed upon before entering the taxi.
By being aware of these scams and taking necessary precautions, you can have a safe and pleasant ferry ride to Isla Mujeres. Remember to always purchase tickets from the official ferry terminals and use trusted taxi services to ensure your journey is hassle-free.
6. Convert Your Money To Pesos
When visiting Isla Mujeres, it is important to convert your money to pesos. While some establishments in popular tourist areas may accept US dollars or credit cards, many smaller businesses and local vendors prefer payment in pesos.
Converting your money to pesos is a fairly simple process. One option is to visit a currency exchange office or bank in Isla Mujeres. These establishments offer competitive exchange rates and are reliable sources for converting your currency. Another option is to withdraw pesos from ATMs on the island. However, keep in mind that you may be charged a foreign transaction fee by your bank.
If you prefer to convert your money before arriving in Isla Mujeres, you can do so at currency exchange offices or banks in your home country. It is advisable to compare rates and fees from different providers to ensure you get the best deal. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the current exchange rate to avoid being shortchanged during the conversion process.
By converting your money to pesos, you will have an easier time navigating local markets, dining at authentic restaurants, and enjoying various activities on the island. So, make sure to convert your money to pesos before or upon arrival to fully immerse yourself in the Isla Mujeres experience.
7. Head South For Quieter Beaches
When visiting Isla Mujeres, everyone talks about Playa Norte. It’s definitely the most popular beach, and is quite stunning. However, don’t miss the chance to explore the quieter beaches located in the south of the island. These secluded spots offer a peaceful atmosphere and are perfect for those seeking a more tranquil beach experience away from the crowds.
One of the best south beaches to visit is Punta Sur. Located at the southernmost tip of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur features breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and the rugged cliffs. This beach is less crowded due to its remote location, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty.
Another quieter option is Playa Lancheros. This beach is known for its calm waters and white sand. It’s a great place to unwind and soak up the sun without the hustle and bustle of the more popular beaches on the island.
To find these quieter beaches, head south from the ferry terminal and explore the coastal road. You can rent a bicycle, scooter, or golf cart to make your way around the island easily. Keep an eye out for signs indicating beach access and follow them to discover these hidden gems.
8. Swim first and then explore
If you prefer to fill your days with a mixture of beach time and exploring, my top tip would be to get your beach time in early. When we got to Playa Norte early (around 9am), it was empty. We were able to get shaded seats right at the front of the beach. We were able to float around without bumping into people, and the sun wasn’t that hot.
During the days that we were out on the water, like when we went snorkeling with whale sharks, we got back to the dock in the afternoon. We could see Playa Norte and it was packed. It didn’t look like there was any room to really float or relax in the water, let alone find a shaded place to sit on the sand. This was during the hottest part of the day too!
Get your beach time in early, then when it gets too hot, you can explore the island. You’ll have a nice breeze in the golf cart and shade!
